Recompressing Huffy or MJPEG gives weird colors

Hi all,

I have a problem when encoding files that I capture with the HuffyUV or MJPEG codecs. Every time I encode them to DIVX (using Virtualdub) I get wildly shifting colours in the resulting AVI.

I don't get this problem if I use 'fast recompress' instead of 'full processing mode', but I need to do full processing in order to run filters and to crop the recording.

Can anyone please offer any clues as to why this might be happening? It's driving me up the wall!

Are you capturing in YUY2 colour format? If not you should be.

I've not come across this problem before but the fast compress methods just cuts out the changing of colour format. (Usually from RGB to YUY2)

Well, the software I was using (Showshifter) was set to record in YUY2.

I have found another way around this problem though - recording in 320x240 instead of what I used before (the NTSC VCD resolution), so it's not so bad after all.

The NTSC VCD resolution is actually 352 x 240 with a 4:3 aspect ratio. When played back in a (good, normal) player, it resizes it to the correct aspect ratio, which is really just resizing it to 320 x 240 . also, when it is played back by a (good, normal) hardware VCD/DVD player, it does the same. :devil:
