Help stripping main movie files

To put it in a nutshell I want to shrink the size of a DVD-9 movie to fit on a 4.7GB DVD+R without losing the quality of DVD by lowering any of the bitrates and/or by de/re muxing.

The main movie files together are 5.02GB. So I used IFOEDIT and opened up the main movie IFO which is VTS_08.IFO and stripped everything except for the 6ch english audio. This got me down to 4.38GB. The problem is that the movie won't play and an "illegal navigation command was encountered".

Here are the steps of what I did once the movie has been ripped:
1.Open the main movie IFO using IFOEDIT

In IFOEDIT, the following options are selected on the left side of the menu.
-strip streams
-correct vob-unit pointers
-correct ifo tables

2. Strip the main movie file to a new directory

IFOEDIT automatically creates a new VIDEO_TS IFO and BUP and combines all the main movie .VOBs into one giant .VOB

3. Copy the VTS_01_01 BUP,IFO, & VOB to keep the DVD playable on a standalone

4. Rename the main movie files (VTS_08_XX.XXX) to VTS_02_XX.XXX

5. Open VIDEO_TS and get VTS SECTORS

I'm not even sure if what i'm trying to do is possible. If it is possible, let me know what I'm doing wrong. I've read numerous guides and have been working on this for 3 weeks but have gotten nowhere. Hopefully this forum will shed some light on WTF i'm doing.

i'd rather use 1 go file. not one giant vob file.

i would rename it to VTS_01_XX.XXX .

you should not copy the old VTS_01_0.BUP.
if it doesnt exist in your new dir, copy the new VTS_01_0.IFO to VTS_01_0.BUP.

then, you can GET VTS_SECTORS (this should always be your last action).

ps: i think you can without vts_01_0.vob

Latest update: I'm still getting the same navigation error right before anything shows up on the screen.

You have another problem anyway...
Movie is 4,38 giga-octets (:-) but DVDR are 4,37Gb (it's 4 700 000 000...)

So, you need to downsize it, just a bit..sorry

You did'nt split your dvd9 in 2 DVD5, so I don't think this is your problem here.

Let's go

IFOEDIT automatically creates a new VIDEO_TS IFO and BUP and combines all the main movie .VOBs into one giant .VOB

Just set Vob Size to 1Gb in IfoEdit !

3. Copy the VTS_01_01 BUP,IFO, & VOB to keep the DVD playable on a standalone

OK, as VIDEO_TS.VOB and VTS_08_0.vob

4. Rename the main movie files (VTS_08_XX.XXX) to VTS_02_XX.XXX
Cannot work. All the navigation info still refer to vts_08.
That is the problem.
Keep it vts_08 and it should work, but can causes trouble in standalones.

5. Open VIDEO_TS and get VTS SECTORS
Last one is good.


Anyway, as already mentionned, 4,38Gb WON'T feet on a DVDR...

So I suggest you reencoded the movie a bit , or cut a bit of the video (like studio or credits at the end)
Anyway, go under 4,37 for the vob_8_1 to vob_8_X, minus the few Kb needed for ifos, empty _0.vob.

But these vobs only in a separated dir and launch Ifoedit and do a creates IFOS. Get vts and you are done.
As you do not have subs, you don't care of sub color problems.

What is the best way to cut out the credits at the end of the movie?

Use VOBRator and find out which cell id is the ending credits..and then when u strip with IFOEdit..do not include that cell id in your rip.

correct me if i'm wrong but ifoedit can remove vob id , not cell id , isn't it?

still, you could demux by cell ids (smartripper or other),
re encode the credits, join files back together to one big m2v file and remux using ifoedit.

dunno if this is the best way to do it.

by the way, you say your movie is 4.38 gbytes (a bit too big so),
did you get rid of vts_01_.vob? (unless you need it).
