Problems going from D2V to AVI

Hi.

Been working on ripping and compressing a DVD to fit on a 4.7

I used SMARTRIPPER to rip my stream D2V style and also the audio into an AC3. Also ripped the SUBs into a new VOB

I extracted my chapters and sub (bmp's).

Next I'm using DVD2AVI to convert the d2v (created by SMARTRIPPER) to an AVI. Later, will feed the AVI to CCE

Not having much success. I keep getting a bunch of 2 gig files that eventually fill my HD up. The 2 gig files also seem not have a relatively small amount of footage.

Are there any particular setting I must be aware of?

If you do a "Save Project" it creates the .d2v file for Avisynth.

If you do a "Save Avi" it creates .avi files. Are you sure you are doing what you intended?

Pretty sure I'm doing it right.
However, I'm not keen on setting.

Since CCE is to do the compression, I instruct DVD2AVI not to do any.
Beyond that, I adjust no other default settings.

I saw mention of CCE later having probs with file sizes 2 or 4 gig regards disk structure (Fat16, 32, NTFS) and wonder if these 2 gig AVI's are a result of. But then, not sure why the files have so little vid. Almost like it jumped the bitrate through the roof! Listed my specs below...

I assume 2-pass provides better quality.

Uncompressed .avi files consume a great deal of disk space for relatively little video.

Since you're the one who experienced "5 days of hell" recently... you might want to try using a well-understood and well-used encoding methodology, such as DVD2SVCD. There are many people in the forum who use it, and they'd be happy to help you through any difficulties or custom requirements.

I do like SVCD's and have made them successfully.
Yet, I have a DVD burner and would like to put it to use.

I do understand the basic's (i think:) in which the VOB is disected into sound and vid then the vid is compressed further and finally, the sound and vid are rejoinded into a VOB again.

The chapter info is also pulled from the IFO and the subs are pulled from the original VOB.

All of the pieces are reassembled, gives me half a mind to create a BDVD2SDVD (big DVD to small DVD) using VB or C.

Exactly! However, SMARTRIPPER created the AC3 and te DV2 file for me. So in a sense, I skipped a step or two. Right?

Does that mean that AVISYNTH is next?

I don't use the .d2v project files created by SmartRipper 2.41, as there are known problems with those .d2v files and Gordian Knot.

But yes, AviSynth uses .d2v files as input via the "mpeg2source" command.

Since I create .avi backups for replay from a PC, I won't be much help. I strongly suggest you follow one of Doom9's guides. Should you have any questions at that point, there will be many forum members who could help you.
