DVD2AVI reporting wrong aspect ratio?

I ripped a DVD recently (clockwork orange). The smartripper info file said it was 16:9, while DVD2AVI in the statistics 4:3! I finally decided to use 4:3 for my divx. Anybody has seen this before and know which is right?

the DAR flag in the MPEG2 stream (which DVD2AVI reports) does not necessarily have to be correct.. I know of at least 2 titles I've ripped where the flag said 4:3 but the movie was actually 16:9. The setting in the IFO actually overrides the setting in the video stream so I think it's safe to say that you can trust SmartRipper more, even though it's not my default ripper (that would be DVDDecrypter since it got IFO parsing).

:confused: That means I made a bad rip or sth like that? But it looked ok... I mean, when a movie is 16:9 it should be anamorphic i.e. it is a little stretched and it squeezes again when you actually play it, isn't it so? I didn't notice it in this movie though. Anyway, if anyone has ripped the movie and can help...

When it comes to the DAR in SmartRipper's ifo_TEXT file vs. the mpeg2 metadata... I've usually found the metadata is correct. You should find a scene with heads, clocks, car wheels, or other round objects and view the image in both 16:9 and 4:3 (GKnot will let you preview in either DAR with the .d2v project file).

This particular DVD has been released in multiple regions at least two times -- with 2.0 sound, and again with 5.1 sound. It's also available in a "collector's edition" and packaged in a Kubric boxed set. All that I was able to find (Warner, Amazon, IMDB) were described as 1.66:1 and letterboxed. DARs weren't listed.

[Edit]: The negative was shot with a 1.33:1 aspect ratio on 35mm, and apparently released to theaters in 1.66:1, according to the IMDB. And Netflix says their version is 1.85:1. I'll bet that's a typo.

Well, I did what you said (checking round objects) and it seemed ok.

The version I had was a region 2 DVD, reading "Stanley Kubrick Collection" on the top of the box. It's the one with the many subtitles.
