Sound probs on DVD encode

Hi,

I'm making SVCD's of some of my favorite cartoons and plan on getting a DVD burner someday. I'm using TMPG to encode the cartoons in DVD format at the max bit rate that will fit on a 700MB cd so I can save the MPEG2's for when I get a DVD burner. I know the wizard starts out at 3000 bit rate for DVD's but I've been kicking that up to 4000+ to fill the 700MB cd, thinking the higher bit rate is better. I've noticed when I play these DVD MPEG2's that sometimes the sound is kind of tinny or it sounds like it's playing in a can. Why is the sound quality not coming through during some of these DVD encodes? Will it sound normal when I finally burn them onto DVD's or will it still sound like it's playing in a soup can?? Any help here would be appreciated.

I had the same problem, as TMPGENC is not very good with audio encoding. I used to use besweet, but that involved demuxing re-encoding and then remuxing with a possible loss of sync.

What I have come up with as being the best method now, is using toolame and ssrc as external encoders to tmpgenc (its under one of the menus, but I cant remember which one at the moment)

ssrc is by far the best sample rate converter and toolame works well as an mp1 layer 2 audio encoder.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm not familiar with toolame or ssrc so I'll have to figure out what they are, where to get them etc.. I'm in the process of moving so it may take me a week to get it tried out but thanks again for helping out and I may have some more questions in a week. I also use Tmpg with lame and ssrc. Im encoding a dvd rip that is 3 hours long so I cut the movie into three pieces and did a batch encoding. The first file is fine but when it gets to the second file, either tool lame or ssrc (cant remember which) causes an error in Winxp and it stops working until I click it. Each of these files is about an hour long. I tried it last night by batch encoding three very short files (2 minutes long) and it moved from file to file without a hitch. I like doing it like this because it elminates cutting the file when you encode one big long file. Have you ever had this problem or might know what is wrong? Thanks in advance.

I have seen both ssrc and toolame crash at various points in the encode. for this reason I dont do editing in TMPGENC, just whole files (or virtual whole files using a frameserver). This has cut down any problems I have had in the past to zero.

Oh and I use win2k, so I don't think it's just you, or XP specific problem you are experiencing.
