i've been kicking this idea around for a while now, and i believe it's time has come.
i propose that a standard media be prepared and made available for testing and demonstation purposes. i suggest a 30 second uncompressed video clip that can be downloaded by members of this forum to use as a test-bed for the different codec and media types that this forum covers.
this clip should have a least one scene change, a fast and low motion sequence, light and dark areas, a segment of high contrast, and maybe a few seconds of animation.
further, it should contain a few frames of a circular object in full profile, and be formatted for 3/4 wide screen, for cropping and resizing issues.
i do not believe audio would be nesessary, but would be a nice touch (PCM).
i've made a few rips that i like to think are pretty good, and a few that left me scatching my head, wondering what went wrong. i also see at this forum many posts stating such things as "Finally, the perfect rip!" and "Video undersize problem". as not all movies being equal, this could give a known source to work with.
and often, a single frame capture is posted to demonstrate the issue at hand.
we're dealing with video here, not still shots.
by creating a standard to work from, i feel that a lot of information (and mis-information) would be better understood, implemented, and demonstrated.
there would be a few details to work out, but i strongly feel that this proposal would be of benefit to all in the pursuit of "The Perfect Rip".
