Severe problems with field settings

I am having severe problems with field setting and am looking for some suggestions.

I have some analog capture video which was captured using a Matrox MJPEG card which I have edited using Vegas which displays fine on the PC in both avi for and MPEG (DVD).

However when this goes onto DVD or is previewed in MPEG form on a TV is either very jittery or has small vertical details jumping around horizontaly.

I have tried rendering out as lower field first, upper field first and progressive an avi and as a MPEG but always get these artifacts.

I suspect that I have field order problems......
Is it possible that field order problems can be caused by the odd dropped frame ?

As I can get access to AE is there anything I can do to 'reset the field order back so it is correct. I am assuming that this is possible because the files play fine on a progressive PC monitor.

This is driving me mad and I desprately don't want to have to go back and capture it all again.

Hi,

it sounds pretty much like a field order problem, means no mater what you render it your MPEG-2 Encoder turns it to the wrong field order.

Not possible, well, Mr. CCESP has the tendency to behave like that. Whenever I encode my PAL DV Streams, no matter what I set in CCESP (Upper Field setting checked / unchecked) the bastard turns it into Upper Field first which is definately wrong for DV PAL, where the recorded Field Order is Lower Field First <- Standard.

So, how to come arround this, after MPEG-2 encoding fire up Pulldown.exe (README !!!) or use Changer.exe from Darim's DVMPEG Package to turn arround the field order setting, et voila corrected...

I have tried two MPEG encoders. First of all the one built into Vegas Video and then CCE after rendering out an AVI. I did then try processing the AVI through AE to see if that was any better at sorting out the field ordering.

All methods produce pretty much the same artefacts !
This suggest to me that the field order has been shafted prior to MPEG encoding.

I will follow up you suggestion about pulldown.

Does this apply to PAL land ?

should be the same issue for PAL & NTSC. I know it in depth for PAL...

Mike,

Pulldown has proved to be the solution.
I rendered as progressive from Vegas which gave video the jittered the entire frame and then used pulldown.

Result was super steady video
