getting rid of whole vobs

hey guys,

i've read several of the guides but couldn't find a clear answer to the quesion i'm about to ask. i must admit there is still a lot i don't uinderstand yet...

i know you need to make new ifos when getting rid of vobs's..

but what about deleting whole vobs and their ifo?

is it just del and burn or are there ifos that need to be changed?

If I get your question right (by "deleting whole vobs" you mean a group of *.VOB - Files, like VTS_01_0.VOB ... VTS_01_1.VOB ... VTS_1_4.VOB ?) the answer is yes and no :D

The result of simply deleting such a group is somehow unpredictable. You may be lucky, that you only dumped unwanted extras. But even then you risk trouble when you select these (no longer existant) extras on your standalone from the menu.
If parts of the deleted VOBs are used somewhere "in between" you break the program-chain and you even risk that your main-movie doesn't play.
My advice: Concentrate on the main Movie. Do the ripping of unwanted languages and subtitles. Use "Create new VIDEO_TS.IFO ...".
IFOEDIT will correct the program-chain and retain the chapters.

After viewing quite a number of movies on DVD, I get the feeling, that these chapter-menues (OK - sometimes they are designed brilliantly) suck because they are often complicated to be navigated through. I prefer "the main event" to start at once. You still can go to a certain chapter with you remote control.

this is exactly what happened when i deleted the vobs.. isn't there a way to edit a ifo that it won't play a certain vob?

There _is_ a way. I read about it (here in Doom9 - where else? :)

But I'm afraid you'll have to do a search for these threads as I don't have them handy. Try a search on "program+chain"

2nd thing: When you start manipulations like this, you enter another, higher level of "fumbling". Be aware that unwanted side-effects may occur.
Burn on RW to test the result on your standallone.
