View Full Version : is there any way to get a "native" 16/9 svcd for playing on s.a. dvd players?

@first, wanna say hi, guys. as you can see i'am pretty new here.

second, i've search the forum. i haven't found the right answer, though.

what's all about:
i got a standalone dvd player (as most of ya do) and a 16/9 tv set. now what do i need, is to make svcds in that format and only that one.
i found a way to do so by using tmpg encoder already. such svcds make trouble playing on 4:3 tvs coz the movie is encoded only in 16/9 but it ain't important to me.

now i would like to do the same thing by using CCE and thus benefit from its speed and multiple vbr-passes.

i've been playing around with dvd2svc/cce little bit but no setting for the aspect ratio gave me the wanted result. making a 16/9 svcd copy from the same dvd was't a problem at all by using dvd2avi/tmpg.

thus the question i have, is there any possibility to adapt dvd2svcd/CCE in order to make an exact copy of the input 16/9 format (full screen and anamorphic with boarders) even without taking care of the 4:3 compatibility?

thnx in advance
rumzeiss

ps: got latest dvd2svcd and cce 2.5

I believe ur question is covered in part in the Q&A no. 57.

Got to the "misc" tab of DVD2SVCD. In the drop down box next to "DVD2SVCD level" select advanced. Now go back to the "conversion" tab and u now have the option to encode as "Anamorphic (no borders addded, encoded as 16:9). If I interpret the Q&A correctly this assusmes that the source is 16:9.

Hope I've helped u just a little.

unfortunatelly i does'nt work m8.
i wouldn't have asked that question if haven't tested before.
there mußt be a problem with dvd2svcd (no offence guys) using tmpg encoder with dvd2svcd i got the same "bad" 4:3 result. using tmpgencoder only there is no problem m8.

thnx anyway m8

ps: i can insert here the *.mcf file which i use for 16/9 in tmpg?

Hi rumzeiss,

if you want to create a anamorphic SVCD you have to select the "4:3 (no borders, encoded as 4:3)" option after you have loaded the IFO file.

And please post your "dvd2svcd_log.txt" file, as it seems there's something wrong with your setup.

i'll give it a try m8 and give ya feedback here next days.
however "4:3 (no borders, encoded as 4:3)" is kinda odd label for an anamorphic aspect ratio m8.
i guess it just means some like "full screen without changing the input ratio".

cheers m8

You're correct, but as SVCDs must have a 4:3 DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) regarding the specs, and as this option is meant to use for 4:3 fullscreen DVDs mainly, the description is IMHO right. This setting can just be "abused" to make anamorphic SVCDs because by not adding any borders, the "input" aspect ratio of the DVD footage is not changed or better letterboxed.

But I think it is all explained in the Q&A (Q57) - or do you think the explanation is unclear?

Option 2: 4:3, no borders added, encode as 4:3. This is exactly like 4:3 in previous builds. This encodes a 4:3 disc with the full 576 line vertical resolution. Because the output from this disc in 4:3 the DVD player does not know to add black lines top and bottom to output to your 4:3 TV so the egghead effect ensues. Some TV's have picture modes to add black bars but the vast majority don't. However, played on a widescreen TV, you only have to stretch horizontally to fill the screen as it is already at full vertical resolution. Less stretching = better picture quality so if you will be watching on a widescreen TV this option is a winner.

sorry m8 but this would never get me think that this setting would provide me with a correct 16/9 aspect ratio on a wide screen tv-set. maybe i'm kinda slow, but it was't clear to me m8.
thus i just tried the two other options, which ain't working. and right i should have tested the last remaining too...

cheers m8

i've finished the convertion. unfortunatelly the svcd is still 4/3.
as i thought before, it is 4/3 stretched to 16/9.

btw the quality is not so good as made with tmpgenc. probably because of the avg. bitrate which is pretty low. i had to set it manually

just in case here the dvd2svcd_log.txt
if you need the ini file then let me know.

because all of ya are pretty quiet, i presume it ain't possible @ the moment to get 16/9 output with dvd2svcd. any chance it will change in the future?

anyway here a template for tmpgencoder which gives ya the perfect 16/9. consider that the file specific settings got to be adjusted.

have fun

I don't know why it's not working for you. I'm new at doing these dvd rips, but I do all my widescreen movies with a "4:3, no borders added, encode as 4:3" setting since I have a 16x9 TV. They come out as a 16x9 encode. The only movies that won't work are non-anamorphic widescreen dvd's.

have you seen the svcd rip of "lord of the rings"-dvd srceener? all rips i get by this method mentioned above look like that rip, which difinetely ain't 16/9.

That rip is 4:3 letterboxed (like most/all released SVCD rips...because they'll look odd on a 4:3 TV)

Perhaps because you're not viewing the SVCD in a suitable player. SVCDs are encoded at 480x480 (1:1) and stretched to 640x480 (1.33, 4:3, whatever) at playback time.

I am having the same questions myself here.
"Option 2" (4:3), as on Q&A would make someone to believe that this is the correct method for all SVCDs for 16x9 TVs, but it isn't !

DVD2SVCD author and Doom9 authors specify that the resolution should be the same with the resolution stated by the movie, i.e. a widescreen movie requires the 16:9 setting, not the 4:3 (option 2) as stated in Q&A and proposed as the best.

Maybe we should create a new thread explaining all about aspect ratios cause it could get a bit confusing....

The whole 16:9 verses 4:3 issue can be very confusing. I have adapted for my personal use 16:9. I don't care what it will look like on a 4:3 TV I don't have one and if my friends want to borrow my DVDs than they either get a 16:9 TV or watch it distorted, that is their problem.

However I am very pleased with the conversion from AVI/DivX to SVCD using DVD2SVCD I haven't done anything from VOBs. As a matter of fact the program surprises me every now and than what a good job it does.

My basic approach is stretch the picture vertically as much as possible using the setting "4:3 (no borders, encoded as 4:3)". Than when I play it back, my player will stretch the picture horisontally and nothing looks distorted because the proper D.A.R. was maintained. The hazzle is to calculate correctly the AVISynth resizing methode and stretching the picture vertically more to allow for widescreen display. If you want to make a anamorphic SVCD instead of a letterboxed SVCD then you have to correct your calculated height with the factor of (4 / 3) = 1.33 also reduce the height of borders added.

This works every time like a charm and CCE does a fabulous job on quality and speed. I haven't used TMPGenc in months.

I don't know why, but what pepsimaxx suggested.Got to the "misc" tab of DVD2SVCD. In the drop down box next to "DVD2SVCD level" select advanced. Now go back to the "conversion" tab and u now have the option to encode as "Anamorphic (no borders addded, encoded as 16:9). should work. I encode all my movies like that and they work perfect. They say some standalones have problems playing those files, but mine (pioneer dv 525) doesn't have any problem playing them. I used to have problems encoding my movies in 16:9 before we got that option in D2S, and I had to edit the avisynth script to have the movie display correct on my wide screen tv. But now, they come out just the way I want.
Power dvd plays the mpeg with the correct aspect ratio. So if it's encoded as 4:3, it opens a 4:3 screen, and if it's as 16:9, it opens a 16:9 screen.
Did you try burning a little on a cd\rw and see how it looks on your tv? I mean that option, the third one, should do it. If your standalone doesn't have problems playing them. (do some testing)
Not much help mabe, but I really belive it should do it for you too.
Wish you luck
