View Full Version : undersized by nearly 3 gigs?

Hi everyone, I have been following doom9 for quite a while now but I decided to start encoding my divx to around 4 gigs, why you ask?
Well basically because I am writing the movie to a dvd-r so size isn't really an issue (well as long as it is less that 4.7GB)...
Anyway I searched the forums for an answer and quite seem to find one...
My problem is:
I am following the guidelines of doom9 for encoding using divx5 and just changing the size of the CD's to 4096 MB (4 gigs!) and encoding ac3 rather that doing mp3 or other codecs... that way I can keep the movie as an original.
Now everything goes ok, the quality looks ok but I checked the file size and it is around 1.5 Gigs when finished.... Really strange because in Gordian Knot I did say size of 4096 MB .. But I have checked the divx avi and it is complete just really undersized...???
Is there a limit I am missing or infact does the divx 5 codec say 'basically there is not point in a larger size' because thats the best I will get.
A little confused here, any gurus care to comment on why I am getting an undersized divx
Thanks guys!

Read Sticky: Undersized Files. Why do I get them, and what do I do about it? (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24584)
Oh, and welcome here, but try to do some more searching next time. Many things, like this, have been discussed a *lot*.

Hey thanks!
I have been searching high and low and seemed to get information that wasn't quite right for my situation but it appears that this has hit the nail on the head..
I was just worried that things were not gonna be ok... now it seems everything is ok
Thanks for commenting so quickly..
and thanks for welcoming me!
best regards

If you're writing to a DVD-R, why don't you try making DVDs instead of DivX rips? (or put 3 or more rips on one...)

Main reason I didn't want to create DVD-R DVD's was that you have to downsize the movie for it to fit on a DVD-R and the quality is not as good as a high quality divx ..
maybe I am wrong but this is what I was lead to believe
Any confirm or deny this, or advise the best solution

If size doesn't not matter you, you can do a one pass encoding with constant quant at 2...It is like the first pass at the 2-pass encoding. With constant quant 2 you get the higher quality possible divx5 can give..It can't give you better...

a) Try DivX or XviD with 1 pass quality-based 100%. This will encode every frame with quantiser 2. Don't use GMC or B-Frames. Keep the AC3 for the soundtrack. But still, you're never going to reach 4.7Gb.
Another thing that I'd do when encoding DivX of this size would be to keep the 720x576 (or 720x480 NTSC) resolution and use a suitable player to stretch it to its correct aspect ratio in real time, thus preserving the full DVD resolution.
b) Quite a few DVDs can be brought down to 4.7 Gb without the need to re-encode by removing additional audio streams, extras, and the like. Of course, you won't be able to bring 'Saving Private Ryan' down, but it can be worth a shot. The advantage of this is that you can watch it on your TV.

Thanks for the comments, but in GKnot 0.26 latest I get three option Both, First, Second and SIngle but single is dimmed out and disabled..

But to keep 720x576(PAL) I must set the crop to disable which means that I have unwanted black lines at top/bottom..
Are you saying that certain players will automatically crop this for me so I don't need to bother with cropping in GKnot?
Thanks in advance

1)Open the d2v in GKnot
2)Make all the usuall stuff(cropping, resizing, etc..)
3)Save you avs
4)Open VirualDub
5)File->Open Video File and open you avs
6)Audio->No Audio
7)Video->Compression Select DivX Pro 5.0.1 Codec (or whatever version you have) and press configure
8)At the tab DivX Codec, at Variable bitrate mode select 1-pass quality based and move the slider to the far right(It should say 100%)
9)At Mpeg4 Tools disable all(if you want) or enable Bidirectional Frames and GMC(you will get smaller size with this)
10)Go to Advanced Parameters and set the Maximum quantizer at 2
11)Press OK
12)Video->Fast Recompress
13)File->Save avi as and enter the name and hit ok
The encoding begins with constant quant at 2(like a first pass)
NOTE : With this you can't predict the final size..Make this only if the final size is not important to you. And at the end you get only the video. You will have to multiplex the audio with the video after it finishes the encding
Hope this helps,
MoonWalker
