Just wondering if there was an easy way to encode the entire resolution of the anamorphic dvd, then have it resize automatically when played? If this is possible, please let me know the settings (I currently use gknot) to use.
My goal is to get the maximum image quality possible for use for a projector. ~60-50% file size reduction is what I'm shooting for. It just seems a waste to through the res away since I will be projecting the image.

Thank you

Of course it is possible, encode it as is, then use for example BSPlayer to play it, it has aspect ratio switches.
But I doubt that it will bring any noticable quality increase, if any!

It would take away from the quality due to the fact that you are using all that bitrate for the black bars. Yes, it is just black bars, but black bars use bits as well and the more bits you give to the black bars, the less you have for your actual movie.

It's not the black bars, they hardly consume bitrate anyway (they consume indeed very few bits, nothing to worry about). Make a 100% quality based compression and you'll see that there won't be much difference in the sizes.
When he encodes anamorph, the actual resolution of the movie is higher. For example a PAL 16:9 movie will take anamorph 720x576, non anamorph only 720x432, so here it will take much more bitrate if he encodes anamorph, not in the other case.
