I've searched on this subject throughly and can't find a straight answer. Does anyone have a Sony DVP-S300 stand-alone player and is able to play DVD-R and/or DVD-RW? If so, which brands? I've checked vcdhelp.com already but that is not always reliable. Thanks.

Well, I can't tell you exactly for sure but that is an older model and I'm not sure if it can handle it. I have a Sony DVP-S7700 (flagship from the same era) and it will not play R or RW, regardless of what anyone would like to think. I have a newer Sony DVP-NS700P that plays everything.

@Trilight
I love the picture quality of my Sony. Do you know of any other brand of dvd players that would match or exceed the picture quality of a Sony dvd player that will play -R and -RW? Preferrably one, that is not too expensive :) Thanks.

You might want to look into Panasonic. I've not had any trouble playing any of my discs on a Panasonic DVD-RV26 and it was cheaper than my Sony NS-700P.

hoops10,
I have a Sony DVP-S300 and it plays DVD-R perfectly. I don't think I've tried DVD-RW on it yet. I've used Meritline, Cdrecordable.com, and Judysdeals discs. They all work. Please note, though, that I have gotten bad discs from cdrecordable.com.

Of all the cheap dvd-r media you've used on the Sony DVP-S300, which has worked the best for you and, if by chance you can remember, where did you get them from (i.e. links online)?
BTW, have you ever tried Optodisc before? Thanks.

I have both a Pioneer DV-333, and a Toshiba SD-K600 that both play -R and -RW fine. They were both under $150 too.

hoops10,
No question about it. The Judy's Deals discs are clearly the best, and they cost $1.59 in lots of 100 (don't know if you need that many). You can get them here. (http://7925.adahost.com/dvdr/index.html) But to tell you honestly, the DVP-S300 is very forgiving -- I have discs that failed on my Apex AD-660 (which is known for running anything) that worked on the Sony!

I've tried Optodisc DVD-R. They play fine in my Sony standalone, which is not a 300 but a 335.

hoops10,
I tried using DVD-RW on the Sony DVP-S300 and it doesn't work. DVD-R is the only option for that player.
