View Full Version : Re-encoding a single VOB file to less then 4.7GB

I have been using DVD decrypter to rip the DVD, and the IFOedit to stip it etc. I have tried using ReMpeg to make the VOB file less than 4.7GB, how long is it supposed to take? I dont want the menu's or anything, just the movie by itself.
What do you guys reckon the best method is for this, I have read the guides, but cant seem to find one that talks about Copying the movie only and if the resulting file is bigger than 4.7GB, what to do then.
(I know there is one that explains ripping the movie only, this works great, but not if the movie bigger than 4.7GB).
Are there any guides that explain CCE with just the movie only? or do they all do the menu's aswell.

Cheers
Any info would be awesome.

"I have tried using ReMpeg to make the VOB file less than 4.7GB, how long is it supposed to take?"

Hairy, when using Rempeg you don't make the "VOB file" less than 4.7GB. You create a *.m2v file, which then needs to be "re muxed" back with your "original" ripped VOBS (note the plural)

You will need to use anothe rlittle application called a "bitrate calculator"

This will tell you at what "Scalefactor" to set Rempeg to. (if the suggested setting is less than 80% consider splitting to 2 discs as the quality starts to fall off.

As for how long does it take ??

I have an Intel P3 600 I have taken between 20-33hrs depending on the movie length, scalefactor etc.

Now, what was the question again???

HomerJ, thanks. I was checking to see whether I was doing something wrong cos it was taking so long, but now I know its not just me. And I knew about the .m2v stuff, I just didnt word my question properly hehe.
So is this the best way? Like I said, I don't care about the menus and subtitles etc. Just want the vob to fit.

You should check the Getting the Best out of CCE (http://www.doom9.org/mpg/cce-advanced.htm) guide. This guide will take you through on how to re-encode the movie. I greatly recommend using CCE instead of ReMPEG. It is ALOT faster, better quality, and offers more settings to have a greater control on the output. Since you dont need the original menu then you could use spruce up or any other authoring program to create your own. Also if follow the CCE guide and you are satisfied with the quality of the first pass then the size is small enough to have 2 movies on the same DVD-R. If you are not satisfied then you can have multiple passes and get the output you want at the size you want it.

Hairy,

I don't have any experience with CCE (although I have read some very good reports on it's performance).

I use ReMPEG.
It's quite simple to use.
It's free.
The quality is very good (I have had one poor encode, some pixelation).
It has NEVER crashed on me (only used it 5 or 6 times though).
I have never created a file that won't fit a DVD-R (so far anyway).

You might say I'm a bit biased (and it would be true), but I speak as I find. From what you have said, you can at least run ReMPEG, so why not go the whole way, and finish a movie ?

I'm sure there will come a day when I'll need to use CCE, but in the mean time, I'll just go on and enjoy using ReMPEG.

I think the best for a movie without menu is :

Rip
Demux Ac3 streams
CCE encode video (with chapters data from ChapterXtractor)

Remux m2v with ac3 in 1Go files
Start IfoEdit and click Creates IFOs
then Get vts sector.

Or, best I think, open Maestro, drag and drop m2v and ac3, import chapters, generate

Even using the guide, I cannot figure out CCE. I can never get past the step where I use my d2v(dvd2avi file) and convert it to "something that CCE can read" using avisynth or the other. I can NEVER get past that step. Any help would be great so I can at least TRY CCE.

on 2.50 version : Avysynth, install and copy dll to system32 dir

then create a file.avs with :
LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth\MPEG2DEC.dll")
mpeg2source("E:\projet.d2v")
resampleaudio(44100)

on other versions :
Use VFAPI : http://65.43.78.94/sbc-basicsetup.htm
Basically, you load the d2v file ans save an AVI.

Once you have an AVI or AVS, just open in CCE by right click in the windows and "add"

Rather than mess about with it and taking up 24Hr+ (yes I have a PIII 650Mhz) - If I can't reduce the size enough by stripping streams I always go for split to 2 x DVD's. There is also usually enough room to include many, if not all, of the extras as well.
The only 2 pitfalls to look out for is the "illegal navigation" and "late start" that can sometimes occur. Have a look here for some explanations.
