Hello everyone,

I've been visiting doom9 for months and I have to say you guys are great. Tons of info and answers. Up until now everything that I needed to know was already available to me. I was hoping someone has already tried to backup the ST:TNG series and was successfull. Can anyone tell me how can I back these up?

14,336 VIDEO_TS.BUP
14,336 VIDEO_TS.IFO
305,152 VIDEO_TS.VOB
18,432 VTS_01_0.BUP
18,432 VTS_01_0.IFO
231,424 VTS_01_0.VOB
10,240 VTS_01_1.VOB
133,120 VTS_02_0.BUP
133,120 VTS_02_0.IFO
59,109,376 VTS_02_0.VOB
1,073,709,056 VTS_02_1.VOB
1,073,709,056 VTS_02_2.VOB
1,073,709,056 VTS_02_3.VOB
1,073,709,056 VTS_02_4.VOB
1,073,709,056 VTS_02_5.VOB
1,073,709,056 VTS_02_6.VOB
1,073,709,056 VTS_02_7.VOB
530,126,848 VTS_02_8.VOB

What I have done so far....
1) Smartripper each of the four PGC's. VTS_02 has 4 PGC (1 for each eposide)
2) DVD2AVI
3) VFAPI
4) CCE - Added the 4 PGC's. Edited the .ECL file added chapter
points.
5) ?

Do I have to use Scenarist for multiple PGC's? Or can Mastero do it?

I see some new tools on the forum.

Where does ScenChap and IFOupdate come into play? I think thats where I am lost.

TIA!!
-PBjr.

So what do you have at this point? 4 .M2V files that represent the four PGCs? If so, you should use Scenarist or ReelDVD.

I usually use ReelDVD you can simple drag the .M2V files into the timeline left to right in order. Then drag from the NXT button on each to the left side of the icon for the other. Set the chapters (get them with ChapterXtractor). Do a "Make Disc" and then "Create Video Files" After it has created the files, rename the VTS files from VTS_01_??.VOB to VTS_02_??.VOB and copy all but the VTS_02_0.VOB into the original directory.

Run IFOUpdate using the newly created IFO and the original and -- you have an file set ready for burning.

Hope that helps.

Is there a way to do it with maestro? I don't have reelDVD or scenarist and would like to do the ST:TNG series.

Yes you can do it in Maestro. But you will have to learn how to use playlists so you can create the separate PGCs. There have been a couple of threads that discussed it -- search for "playlists"

PB junior-

What video settings did you use for TNG in CCE? When I preview the vobs in DVD2AVI, it keeps switching between NTSC and FILM; it will also switch between progressive and interlaced. I'm still kinda new to all this, so any help would be appreciated.

I hate these mixed progressive and interlaced streams. Has anyone on this planet ever found a reliable way to fix this? ST-NG keeps switching depending on the scene. I have yet to find a way to make both frame types look good. If I run:

telecide()
decimate(cycle=5)

the progressive portions look good but the interlaced gets jumpy. If I:

telecide()
decimate(mode=1, threshold=50)

the interlaced portion looks good, but the progressive gets jumpy.

I also tried forcing film, or used another IVTC:

greedyhma(1,0,4,0,0,0,0,0)

same, same...

I own the DVD set -- but damn it I want to back it up!

Well, I see what jdobbs was talking about. It came out like crap!! :( Ok, so now what are the options?

I guess I could split the dvd to a double sided disc. 2 on each side, without re-encoding. I attempted this awhile back. Problem, I ran into was on the 2nd side (episode 3+4) the menu was linked to vob3+4, which doesn't exist...it is now 1+2.

Anyone know how can I point the menu to point to vob1+2?

Thanks,
PBjr.

jdobbs,
I did Superman several months ago and if I remember correctly some of the extras were mixed. I believe I used DVD2AVI and didn't use FORCED FILM on and I believe I only used decomb to deinterlace w/o performing an IVTC. It's been a while but I think that's how I did it. Hope that helps, dvdRENEGADE

P.S. I plan on doing the Superman over because it was a multi-PGC title and reauthored my own menu the first time and only included 1 or 2 of the extras. I'll try it in the next day or so and will see exactly what I did the first time, because I had the mixed extras playing clearly throughout.

dvdRENEGADE,

If you find more please update me. This happened to me a few months ago with COSMOS (it also had inconsistent bottom/top field first problems in addition to mixed progressive/interlaced) and I eventually just gave up. I'm determined to make this work this time.

jdobbs,
I never did Superman again. However, I just did The Wizard of Oz and it contained alot of extras that were mixed. I reencoded all 36 pgcs of title set 2 (I used the settings for mixed streams with 34 of them). I left the streams at 29.97.

DVD2AVI
forced film off

AVS (with Decomb settings)
LoadPlugin("MPEG2DEC.dll")
LoadPlugin("c:\apps\dvd\avisynth\decomb.dll")
mpeg2source("04.d2v")
Telecide()
Decimate(mode=1,threshold=50)
ReSampleAudio(44100)

I used the ReSampleAudio(44100), because I have an AMD processor.

CCE
I had progressive frames checked.

Hope that helps,

Is there a way to import the chapters into ReelDVD? I'm really tired of manually setting each chapter.

golfextreme,
Not yet. Hopefully, some nice programmer will make a tool to do this. I don't know if you've checked the scenarist guide on Doom9 lately. It's much easier to handle multiple pgc titles now.

i found it easiest to split the dvd9 to 2 dvd5's and create my own new menu for use in maestro. this gives me a flawless result every time. tv series are alwayws dodgy for re-encoding, but i buy the pal ones anyways.

dvdRenegade,

Thanks for the advice. I've found that the AVS setting with DECOMB works on all the STNG episodes except the first. In that one the final credits start jumping. I'll figure out a way to encode the credits differently. I also discovered (after encoding several discs) a weird bug in which SmartRipper loses about 3 minutes off the end of the last episode (PGC) on each disc... Bitch!!! Fixed that by breaking out the PGCs using DVD2AVI instead of SmartRipper.

golfextreme,

Here's how I do chapters in ReelDVD:

1. Open up ChapterXTractor, and set the preset to "DVDMaestro" -- then open up the original IFO. Keep it open.

2. Start ReelDVD and import your audio/video.

3. Zoom out so you can see the entire timeline.

4. Drag the timeline pointer (used for adding chapters) over close to the end of the movie. Let it stay there.

5. Switch to ChapterXtractor (ALT-TAB) and highlight (with the mouse) the first chapter. Push CONTROL-C (a shortcut for "Copy"). While you're there drag the window to a position so it doesn't cover the "Add Chapter" button in ReelDVD.

6. Push the "Add chapter" button in ReelDVD. Then click to the right of the new timeline pointer (selecting the chapter).

7. Highlight (with the mouse) the "Chapter Time" at the bottom of the screen. Push CONTROL-V (paste). The time from ChapterXtractor will be pasted -- push ENTER, and the time chapter will be set to the new time. If the frame specified is not an I-Frame, the nearest I frame will be used.

8. Repeat 5 through 7 for the remaining chapters.

I've found that after you get used to the clicking rhythm, you can set all the chapters in less than 5 minutes.

jdobbs,

Can you go into detail on how you do this with DVD2AVI?

Thanks for posting the Smartripper bug. I would have wasted all that time.

Thanks,

Sure. Just rip the entire DVD to your hard drive in "Files" mode. Then use DVD2AVI to open the entire VTS (containing all four episodes). Move the timeline pointer on the bottom of the screen to the beginning of each episode and press the "[" button. Move it to the end of the episode and press the "]" button. Then click on "File" and "Save Project." Do this for each of the four episodes and you'll end up with four .D2V files and four sound files. Use those for reencoding.

Where does ScenChap and IFOupdate come into play? I think thats where I am lost.ScenChap helps you create chapter points that correspond exactly to the original. It generates text for you to paste into your .ECL file, before running CCE. It also generates a script containing matching chapter points for Scenarist.
