Padre are u using the jewel case or the "bulk" discs.
They are out of stock on the jewel cased "retail" ones.....chances are the BULK discs are not the same ...did u check the drive manuf. using advdinfo?
Pm me if the moderator thinks this thread is a prob. Although I believe that it is an important topic....moderators think otherwise.

My discs didn't arrive yet, so I can't tell if they are "true" Primediscs. Got my fingers crossed...

Yes, I think it's an important topic as well. Newbies, as well as seasoned vets, need to know about vendor issues when it relates to burning quality DVD-Rs.
I'm not 'bashing' anyone, just letting folks know that these kind of circumstances can surely affect your burning process.
I bought the 'bulk paq', in a lot of 50. I had just bought the same thing 2 weeks earlier, and they were real PrimeDisc. The batch I got this time had nothing but 0's in the manuf. code with advdinfo. Besides, just looking and feeling the difference between what I normally recieved as PrimeDisc and what these were, it was simply not the same discs. I've returned them, unused, for refund.
To give you some idea if they are true PrimeDisc DVD-R (single-sided, don't know about the double), they should be a dark, deep purple. Feel thicker than most generics. Have a foggy/semi-clear center hole (my DVDs have always started with "C1-....", but that could just be the run numbers).

Too bad u didn't try any....
I have 100 of those on order and I am wondering what to do when they arrive.
Also...I wonder if the jewel cased ones have been changed as well.
The prime I got from em in the jewel case matched your decription but they Identified as Ritek-G03 with advdinfo.
Even if Prime altered their manuf. it would be useful to know whther they still work.

Shop4Tech said I could 'try them' and return them if I had problems, but I went through that b.s. trying to identify a good brand of DVD-R before, and wasn't going to restart. So I chose to return for refund.
I saw somewhere that PrimeDisc is manufactured by Ritek, which is fine by me. As long as they worked, and the originals did for me on everything I could play them on.

Padre,
Primedisk is indeed Ritek. I've spoken to the the Distributor for Ritek in Europe and they told me that Primedisk buys DVD-R's from them and markets them under the brand name Primedisc. This is supposed to be good stuff...

Like I've been saying, the PrimeDisc DVD-Rs have been working like champs for me. I've been getting emails from others who have been using them with the same great results. I just have to find another source for them now, for true PrimeDiscs.

You can find the same DVD-R (Ritek Golg dark purple) on:
http://www.supermediastore.com/47dvdisgenpu1.html .
Only the packaging is different: it comes in a 25 pack spindle.
Unless other DVD-R, the surface has a strong dark purple, and ADVDINFO gives the manufaturer as "RITEKG_03"
I agree with you, this media is the best one !! I have burnt about 150 of them and add only a problem with one. Most of the other cheap one are real crap, freezing after 50mns or so, or even not playing at all.
Again Primedisk = Ritek = Meritline Gold dark purple.

I just ordered 10 Ritek GP disc from rima.com to test 'em out. I cancelled my order for 500 PrimeDisc......from Shop4tech...reduced it to 25 retail boxed PrimeDiscs......just to see.
That supermediastore site has been going up and down all day......no luck with them.

I ordered a 50-pack spindle of PrimeDisc from Shop4Tech.com after reading about other's success using the product. The shipment arrived last Monday. I immediately ran ADVDInfo and it showed they were Vivastar DVD-Rs. I've emailed several times in the last week and have received no response from Shop4Tech. This is unprofessional and illegal. I'm sure (PrimeDisc) and Ritek appreciate Shop4Tech using their good name to con unsuspecting customers into buying other cheap media. Can someone say class action lawsuit?

Londo,
That's not the point - when one orders product X, and pays for product X, you should be getting product X, not Y - and I don't care if someone else likes Y, I didn't order Y!!
dvdRENEGADE, let me know what you hear from Shop4Tech on their excuse for the 'bait and switch' as I've been calling it.

As far as Shop4Tech goes, I've been reading on this forum and others, that their, as padre calls it and it exactly right, "bait and switch" is common practice. I've read multiple threads mirroing what others are saying in this thread. Is there anywhere else to get Primedisc dvd-r's or Optodisc dvd-r's (I heard they are really good too) from?
padre

I see that Supermediastore has them, and I found an Ebay seller who has them. I ordered 50 from the Ebay guy, since his prices were very good and rating was very high! I'll let everyone know how they look/work when they arrive.

You know what's funny?! I went to the Shop4Tech website today, and they have a new picture representing the 'PrimeDisc bulk/spindle' and the discs are BLUE! Not even light/dark purple, but blue! And the ad says this is 'New'?? What's new? the fact that they are selling you one thing and delivering something else??
FYI, I've contacted PrimeDisc to see what action they might want to take.....stay tuned folks....

I burnt a bunch of "VIVAST_AR" and they ALL failed playing back in APEX, and even in my Burner A104 -- I usually get cyclic redundancies errors on in the middle of the last VOB.
The only DVD-R that works for me is either "RITEKG_03" or "RITEKG_01" (Ritek or Primedisc "gold"). They are very different from the other one because of the very dark purple color.
I cannot believe that this shop4tech sells this crap instead of the true Ritek/Primedisk !!!
Anyway good luck to you, may be I just got a bad batch of vivastar.

I have one of the original PrimeDisc's that I love, and it's OE tag says "RITEKG..03" according to ADVDInfo. The ones I got from Shop4Tech in the last run had nothing there...(I may have not been using ADVDInfo correctly). But just looking at the two discs, they are clearly not the same manufacturur or quality.
Hey thxtof, the ones that failed to play in your Apex, were they a light purple? Have you contacted Shop4Tech for a refund/exchange?

the "primedisc" from shop4tech wich are in fact vivastar are thin, lite purple with a circle on the surface about 1 cm away from the center. i dont feel too good about this wierd circle ...
i'll let u know. have to burn 1st.
nevertheless, i have to say :
i live in france and medias here are about 10$.
on shop4tech, it comes down to less than 2$ including shiping.
and i got them in less than a week. i was able to buy them by email and the guy there was pretty accomodating.
so if these vivastar's work in my philips player, it will be fine with me.
if it dont i'll be really pissed because i bought 25 of these so called "primedisc" ! :)
mainly because everyone was telling nice things about them !

After waiting for a response to 2 sets of emails over the past week and a half, I called Shop4Tech customer service today. A guy answered and I told him I had placed an order for PrimeDisc but received Vivastar. The guy I spoke with was friendly and did not try to convince me I actually had PrimeDisc DVD-Rs. He asked me to look at one of the DVD-Rs and tell him what the number was on the clear circle in the middle of the DVD-R. It didn't have one. He said PrimeDisc (Ritek) usually has a number there beginning with C1- . He said he'd have UPS pick up the DVD-Rs from me and as soon as they do to call back and he'd ship out actual PrimeDisc replacements. I asked if they would say Ritek using ADVDInfo. He said either that or PrimeDisc. I asked if they'd be a dark purple color. He said yes almost a burgundy color. So, that's where I'm at. I'll keep you updated as it unfolds.

As for Londo saying in this thread "Don't be too quick to dump the .. VIVASTAR's are good stuff also." Vivastars are crap in my opinion. I've bought some previously. All had skipping problems on multiple DVD standalones, 2 models of Apex and a Sony. They're in the league with Princo in my opinion.

Padre,
The one failing were all clear purple, with "VIVAST_AR" for the manufacturer. I got 4 for free when I bought my burner with esbuy.com, and latter 25 from Meritline.com. At the time I ordered the ritek dark purple and they sent me this crap without even telling me -- they were out of stock at the time. So I shipped everything back and got refund, even for the shipping.
In my opinion supermediastore.com has now the best deal. They have the Ritek Gold 03 (dark purple) at 1.25$ if you get the 25 pack.
I exchanged a couple of emails with them and they have an excellent customer service. I always got an answer to my questions within an hour !
Again in my experience only the very dark purple (ritek/primedisc) one work 100% of the time.

BTW ....guys...with PrimeDisc /Ritek-G03 .. I have been getting a 10% failure rate....in the last bit of the disc. The outer edge. usually I get sticking/skipping if the movie is over 4G.
1 in 10 discs sees this prob. Even though they verify on the burner. I test em in a daewoo 5700 and a daewoo 515....APex shows no stick.....RCA & Yamaha shows stick. Pioneer shows video breakup.

Yeah I noticed the same problem on 1 of my riteks DVD-R (but I burnt 100+ of them).
It was failing reading back the end of the last VOB in my burner, and skipping in the APEX for the credits of the movie...
Now I always try to copy the DVD back on my PC to make sure. Did not have any pb with the last 25 I burnt, it even reads back in x5 x6 speed !

25th July 2002, 13:35
i just burned (1x max) one of these vivastar shop4tech is selling (calling them primedisc).
it burned without any pbs and it plays flawlessly in my philips setop player. my burner is a pioneer A03 with firmware 1.80 (read somewhere the writing quality got better with 1.80)
it's only one of my 25 batch but i want to feel confident :)
MOSAIC : i read you have a 10% failure with ritek/primedisc, sound quite a lot for me !
i used apple dvdr and so far i never had any pbs (2x).
samething with hi-space (1x).

In the 300 or so PrimeDisc's that I've burned, I think I only had 1 that had a similar problem with the end of the disc. It was fully filled disc (don't think I had 1 byte left!), and it did a little chop at the end. Funny thing was, I did the same burn to a dvd-rw, did the same thing! Maybe I was trying to overburn?

LATEST INFO:
After sending a stinging email to Shop4Tech about the situation, they responded quite nicely. They are going to exchange the discs for the proper PrimeDiscs and covering my return shipping costs.
I want to thank dvdRENEGADE for his information, as it gave me a foundation to deal with Shop4Tech.
I've also asked them what steps they are taking to make sure this situation does not happen again (the bait and switch). We'll see what their response is.

Manuel Ortaneda ..their Sales & Dist. manager called me on Wednesday..
He indicated that the PrimeDisc are back in stock and that they "other" disc are being returned to manuf. He said the other disc was optodisc.
Anyway...I am still waiting on the 25 disc to test em....They are en-route.
If they not the real thing.....well....I will be upset, and so will my monthly purchase of 400.

I now have two good sources for PrimeDisc DVD-Rs. Shop4Tech has apparently resolved their issues and are shipping real PrimeDisc. And I have recieved an order from a seller on Ebay called Imagic2002 who sells them at $70 for 50 or $135 for 100 (delivered). Send me a private message if you want their email address.

A friend and I have an Apex 1500... Well guess what:
the only DVD-R that we can read back ENTIRELY (usually the last 30mns are the most critical) is the Ritek "RITEKG_03".
All the other DVD-R that we tried don't work in the APEX !
We had about 20 optodisk ("VIVAST_AR") they all failed :(
Same for Meritline true x2, same for CD-Recordable unbranded.
redfield, just curious, what DVDINFO says for your optodisk ?? is that "VIVAST_AR" ?? Did you try to play the DVD until the end ?

The DVDr's I have say VIVAST..AR. Played on Apex and Playstation all the way through with no problems. I used the Stomp Record Now Max to burn since it burns compliant DVDrs. Plus I only burn at 1x.

the software you use is important, the media quality as well and you standalone player's tolerance also and even then : there is the hazardous factor :)

So far, the PrimeDiscs I've burn play all the way to the very end with no hiccups. I've tested them on Apex, JVC, Sony, Samsung. They also play on my DVD-Rom drive in my PC (it hates most DVD-Rs) and plays on my Panasonic Portable L50. So, for dvd compatibility, PrimeDisc seems perfect for me. I use Prassi (after building the image with IfoEdit) and burn at max speed (only get 1x).
BTW: Shop4Tech is sending me the replacement PrimeDiscs. So, it looks like they've figured out their misshipment problem. At the prices they sell them, I figure they're worth another chance.

I bought a 25 pack of the Ritek dvd-r's from Supermediastore.com and on top they are silver. Are they able to be written on with a Sharpie or something else?
BTW, how do I know if they are 2x media? Would ADVINFO tell me?
padre
1st August 2002, 21:54
Hoops, I think you can use a Sharpie to write on the disk. I use a thin, semi-transparent label and have had NO problems. It hasn't passed Commander's test (not having been on the disk for years), but so far, so good.
I just got my replacement order from Shop4Tech and they are perfect PrimeDisc. Burned a couple already and back to business as usual. I'm glad they figured out what the problem was, since they are a great source for PrimeDisc and cases.
BTW: I bought a handful of DVDPro from Meritline (I know, I know, what the hell was I thinking!!). Well, I'm definitely in agreement with others on this forum, crappy media. When I play them on my Apex players they jump and pixelate towards the end of the 4gb mark. They won't play on my PC-DVDROM or Panasonic portable DVD player. I did a check with ADVDinfo and found them to be Princo....ARGH! Well, that's money down the tube. Well, maybe I'll mail them to my ex-girlfriend!
