View Full Version : subtitle placement
hey guys,
what's the official (or best) "std Y-Pos" for NTSC and PAL for 16:9 movies? i want to be able to watch the movie on a widescreen tv without any blackbars so the subtitles must be in the videobox.

There isn't really a set 'best' location, per say, it's just wherever you think is the best location. I'm sure a few members wouldn't mind posting their own personal 'best' values though ;)

Simply use the preview feature to see what you like best. BTW, depending on the OAR, some widescreen movies will still have black bars, even if you watch them on a 16:9 TV.
you mean when the movie is 2.34:1...
is there a way to cut a piece off from both sides so it becomes a 16:9 movie?

If you mean cropping, then yes you can crop edges off the movie, if you wish to do so. But keep in mind you'll lose pieces of the picture too...
can you tell me how?
i've looked for it but couldn't find it in dvd2svcd.. it isn't in the doom9 guide either..

@Lev:
Well, usually it's printed somewhere on the DVD cover or you can search amazon.com for more info on a specific title. Or you have a look at the preview window of DVD2SVCD if the picture is somewhat stretched vertically (with egg-heads) then it is anamorphic (and DVD2SVCD will set the "Aspect ratio" to "16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3)" upon loading the IFO file.
If it is not anamorphic, the picture will look correct (more or less because of the little different pixel aspect ratios of a PC monitor and a TV set). But you will see the difference between the two aspects. In this case DVD2SVCD usually sets the "Aspect ratio" to "4:3 (no borders, encoded as 4:3)" that's it.
Hope this helps,
Gerti

I don't have a widescreen tv yet, but I plan to get one. So if I place them in the black bars in the preview, will they be shown on a widescreen (where there are no black bars)?
I've been placing the subtitles just above the black bottom bar in the preview, but I'm not sure if that's the right way, because when I use the zoom on my dvd player, the subtitles stays where they are.
So is the subtitle measurement from the bottom of the tv screen or from the picture somewhere?
Hope someone understand my question ;).
Cheers - ForeverDuke.
