Encoding "Shrek" - Really "blocky" in fire- etc. scenes!

Hi everybody,

I've been encoding Shrek some months ago, but never got to check out the results (vacation's great! :)). Now that I took a look at it, I was VERY happy with the image quality, as long as the camera didn't move too much or there were lots of flames, beer flooding out the barrel etc... Espeically the latter 2, cause then the image quailty went downhill like WHOA! Blocks and blocks... now I know, that camera movements are one of the main problems of SVCD's but still, this quality seemd to low, IMHO, since I've also made copies (although of different movies) with a cheapo, on-the-fly programm called DVDx, and it was not that blocky at all... although the overall image quality was distinctively lower. If any of you guys could check my log and tell me what to change, or if I'm maybe just aiming too high (like I said, I doubt that => DVDx results), I would be very grateful! :)

Well for starters, TMPG isn't your best bet for quality encodes. Have you tried it with CCE?

I agree with UltimateDBZ - use CCE 2.5 SP instead of Tempgenc - better quality ..

Another thought - Do the two mpg files play without blockiness as you say ?? If they play fine then the problem is in how you burned the bin/cue files to the CDR - maybe you burned at too fast a speed ?? If the mpg files play "blocky" also then you should re-encode the movie using CCE as mentioned above.

just like ultimatedbz and bob01605 stated tmpgenc is not the best for encoding svcd's i would switch to cce 2.50 sp or 2.62.

Also i wanna thank some of you guys for helping out i've noticed the mood of the forum has improved thanks to Ultimate, bob01, siliconsoul, matthew and all you other guys out there that help i appreciate......

Otherwise, if you want continue using Tmpg use 2pass instead of CQ, will give you better results (not as good as CCE but IMHO better than Tmpg CQ)

Bob, I didn't mean "choppy"(like low framerates in games) but instead blocks being visible in fire for example. I only burn at 4x anyways, also I made a preview with DaemonTools and it was all the same... thanks for the advice, though :) .
