mpeg 2 file to divx help?

I have an ati radeon aiw 8500 and capture videos in mpeg-2 format because it lets me pause the capture process whenever I want. This helps me eliminate commercials...Now I would like to take these videos and encode them to divx, what is the easiest way to acheive this? or even asf would work for me... I just want to send these files to my friend over the internet.

Unfortunately I don't know if your Radeon card produces a transport stream or a program stream...

If it's the latter, there should be no problem to create a DVD2AVI .d2v project file (setting the audio options to demux), then convert the audio using BeSweet, and use GordianKnot to open the .d2v project, crop, resize, and encode.
