i ran into the same problem, with unsmooth playback on the movie evolution, but i was using mp3, not ac3. im not completely sure how i fixed the problem i was having, which could be different to yours, but the problem laid in dvd2avi. im not entirely sure where the specific problem was as i must have changed every setting, but try changing the colour space or using forcefilm if nig103's suggestion doesnt work (which sounds a lot more liable to work than mine).
