hey gys,

i own a pioneer dv-343 and had a look at vcdhelp.com for the specs:

XVCD
2500kbit/s
XSVCD
2500kbit/s

is this only the video or video + audio?

so what can i use as max bitrate for a cbr encode when i use 192kb/s audio? maybe a stupid question but i don't know if dvd2svcd uses bits or kbits in the bitrate screen considering a kbit is 1024 bits...

hope you can clear this up for me..

thnx in advance (:

That total of 2500 is most likely the video & audio total. The bitrate and audio tabs of DVD2SVCD both use kb/s, meaning that if you want audio to be at 192kb/s, then you max. video bitrate can be 2,308.

My experience with a Pioneer DV-444 is that any SVCD compliant encoding is OK, i.e. video + audio < 2748. The max I have tried is max 2500 + 224 and max 2530 + 192. I am quite sure that all Pioneer models behave the same. Max bitrate of a player is usually the total bitrate as it is linked to the physical speed of the CDROM reader.

As a side comment, I fully trust the DVD2SVCD forum members, but moderately trust what I read on vcdhelp ... until it is confirmed here !

Try the search function for Pioneer 343...
U"ll find a lot of Markb old posts who mentioned that P343"s max bitrate is 2600kb/s...
And i trust him than anyone else...:) e.g vcdhelp....

I have TWO Pioneers - an older 525 and a newer 503 five disk changer. Both will choke on higher bitrates much above the 2600 - 2650 range. The picture will stutter a little - Interestingly, the sound still seems smooth. The two Pioneers also will not play anything above 930 - 940 meg files on 90 and 99 min CDR - they go into an infinite loop of about 3 seconds and keep playing that same sequence over and over.
I also have an inexpensive Apex 1500 which will play, at least so far, any bitrate on any format on any length disk I place in the tray.

Moral of the story is - Just because a DVD player can play regular DVD's at 3000-5000 or more kbps does NOT mean it will play SVCD's or VCD's at bit rates outside spec for each of these two formats.

i did a test yesterday.. i encoded the same 1 minute chapter in several different bitrates using cbr encoding and my conclusion is that it plays 2600 kb/s max.. above that the sound or video will get a little jerky in times.
