apologies if this has already been posted elsewhere on the forum - I haven't see it myself...

From the Homepage:

(*AMONGST OTHER THINGS*, DVDSynth includes: )

[[DVD subtitler: This filter effectively adds a new subtitle track to a DVD, by inserting new data into the MPEG stream and updating the various navigation pointers on the fly. Since it works at the device-driver level, it's compatible with all software and hardware DVD players. It comes with a fairly sophisticated subtitle rendering engine which supports asynchronous overlapping subtitles in multiple fonts and colors, fade-in and fade-out, the full Unicode character set, vertical Japanese "sidetitles," etc]]

So not absolutely necessary to us authorers, but quite an original and interesting idea, I'm sure you'll agree. Of course, it does mean that in order to share the benefits of it, other users would have to install it first, too, which is a pity, but not prohibitive.

Supported systems
DVDSynth runs only under MS Windows. Would like to make a Linux version, but that's still in the future.

DVDSynth has been tested on three machines: one running Windows 2000 (development machine), one running the original Windows 95, and one running Windows 98 SE.

DVDSynth is untested, but should work on Windows 95 OSR2, Windows 98, Windows ME, and Windows XP.

DVDSynth will not work on Windows NT 3.x or 4.0, Win32s, or Wine.
