Hi all,

Im new here and my first question is regarding IVTC.
It may be a stupid question, I dunno, but I have at least tried
searching for information on how to solve it before asking here.

I have this IVTC problem on a few discs that Im trying to make backups on.

First to get this straight:
If DVD2AVI shows 95% FILM (or above) I use "ForceFilm" (works like a charm. In other cases if 3 out of 5 (or in some cases 2 out of 5) frames are interlaced I use "Inverse Telecine" to get down to 23.97 fps. No problem there either.

But on a few DVD´s I have there are 4 out of 5 frames that are interlaced, and when I use Inverse Telecine on those I get a little bit of a jerky picture. Its barely noticeable but it looks like a frame is missing here and there. It appears like every 10th second or so. Common for those DVD´s that have 4 out 5 frames interlaced are that Im almost sure that they have used a PAL master. They are all European films released "for the first time in full versions in America". Dont know if that information is valuable or not though.

If anyone has a nice trick on solving this with a Decomb parameter or something, I would be very grateful!

Thanks,

Morc

Hi and welcome to the forums-

I think you'll just have to Deinterlace the things. Make your .d2v with no Force Film (29.97fps), then use either FieldDeinterlace from Decomb, or go to the AviSynth Forum and pick up the new (and maybe better) TomsMoComp Deinterlacer for video sources. The reason it seems jerky is that it is jerky and is dropping non-duplicate frames when you put on Telecide-Decimate from Decomb. If you're getting 4 interlaced frames out of 5, then it can't be IVTC'd.

There's a chance you can use Telecide without Decimate to reconstruct the frames, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Strange-it's easy to master PAL material for NTSC. Amelie just came out and they did a good job on that one.

So I should consider my source as fully interlaced NTSC then, and
keeping the 29 fps ?

Ill try that,

Thanks a bunch!

Hi-

Later in the day after posting that I started to work on a Honk Kong movie and discovered exactly the same thing-4 of 5 frames interlaced and many blended fields as well. I tried every way I could to IVTC it but with no luck (I should have known better than to even try). Telecide(Post=False) didn't work well either. So, yes, consider it interlaced and keep it at 29.97fps. However, it did give me a chance to try TomsMoComp for deinterlacing, and it's very good. Get the .dll down in the AviSynth Forum, add the load Plugin line into the .avs, and then after crop add TomsMoComp(1,5,1), which seemed to be just as good as (1,15,1) and much faster. Don't forget to check out the Help File. You have to abide by the Horizontal Crop Divisible By 4 Rule.

Here's the TomsMoComp (http://www.trbarry.com/TomsMoComp.zip) if you'd like to try it out.

Thanx a lot!
I will check out TomsMoComp, i just read about it in the other forum.
Just out of curiosity, what Hong kong movie was it (and what company)?

I have quite a lot of Hong Kong DVD´s and all of them, so far, inverse telecine has worked fine on.

Hi-

The movie is Robotrix, featuring the ample charms of Amy Yip. Here's a link to Robotrix (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000296QX/ref=ase_stomptokyo/103-9212145-1035068). Not as good as Naked Killer, as one guy said, but decent. It was produced by Tai Seng, and wasn't one of their good transfers. For more on the quality of the transfers of the different companies and HK films in general, then you might be interested in this DVD Talk Thread (http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=202208). I've got a bunch also, and although the HK films can usuallty be IVTC'd, it's not always true. It's a rare one that can be Force Filmed.
