I'm still fairly new to DVD ripping, so I'm still learning the art.

Done about 8 movies so far.

I have sucessfully performed :-

1 A straight DVD-5 to DVD-R,

2 Used ReMPEG2 to re encode a movie to fit onto a DVD-R

3 Split a movie across 2 discs.

With the exception of the first option how do people decide wether to "Encode" (doesn't matter if it's ReMPEG or CCE etc..) or split across 2 discs ?

I'm starting to form the view that if a movie (forget about extras and so on) takes more than 20hrs to encode, I might as well split to 2 discs (my discs cost £1-50 each).

Any thoughts anybody ??

I would reencode for two reasons -

I can't tell the difference in quality, although a more trained eye probably could.

I hate switching discs, and even more than that, keeping track of two discs.

IMHO. But it's personal preference.

HomerJ,

I'm a fan of splitting to 2 DVD-R's. It takes me 24Hr + to transcode a film - and that's just the first stage
As DVD media is coming down in price ( have you tried www.lordofthedeals.co.uk ?)I find that using 'the great Ifoedit' to split to 2 x DVD-R's usually leaves enough room to copy over the extras onto both discs as well :)
so, many hours for film transcoding use 1 x disc Vs Splitting with extras use 2 x discs. The latter wins hands down.:D
