View Full Version : AMD or Intel - Which Re Encodes Faster?

I am about to buy a new system, thinking of a performance gain in the re enconding operation in REMPEG.
I know that AMD has it's strong points in some type of apps and intel has other strong points (like for example, in gaming). So for the specific type of application that REMPEG is, which processor is faster????????

I'm a AMD man myself ;)
Here are two links that have honest reviews and benchmarks, go research and read. AMD cpu's have stable mobos out now, and for the price vs performance AMD kills Intel :p
It takes P4 @2200mhz to tie or beat my computer LOL
Here are the links...

If you have the money to splurge get an Intel. But for more bang per buck get an AMD. I am overly happy with my AMD.

The software you use needs to be optimized for whatever chip you have, AMD or Intel, in order to see full performance (3DNow, SSE, etc).
Up until recently, the divx 5 codec was optimized for the Intel chips, but now has AMD support.
Personally, I'm in the AMD boat, like others, best bang-for-buck. Just glad that programmers are optimizing for AMD as well as Intel.

Yeah with my Anthlon XP I am only missing out on SSE2. I have MMX1/2, SSE, 3dNow1/2, etc. Just SSE2. Lets see an Intel user say that! hehe. Not all implimentations are equal. But can it hurt to have the most? :)

the p4 is alot faster on encoding then any amd chips. (unless you get a dual board :p )

It all depends on what type of money you are wanting to spend really.
I have a dual Xeon (P4) 2.4Ghz system with 4 Gb of redundant memory (3Gb usable, 1 Gb is redundant), all SCSI U160 73Gb 10K hard drives, 1 gigabit NIC, and more toys than you can shake a stick at added on this baby.
THERE IS NO AMD SYSTEM OUT THERE THAT CAN RIP AS FAST AS THIS!!
I can rip a movie at almost real time! But I also blew ALOT of coin on the system (but I resell it to a customer when something new comes along so who cares!)
If you want awesome performance for a lower budget well buy AMD but have LOTS of fans and learn to tolerate the fan noise. Mine you can hear a pin drop next to it but it also costs 6 times more too.
Just my opinion and I am sure a few of you AMD people will trash me over this but I build both NOW and will build anything anyone wants but I still prefer Intel because of its reliability. How gives a crap if they are more expensive, its only money and like your going to take that with you when you die. You also earn it to spend right?!? Why not spend it on what you love to do!
:)

But most people don't have possession of your limitless pockets.
For instance, you can get a dual processor AMD board, with two processors, for the same price as one of Intel's fastest. It'll blow away the Intel. Sure you can get a faster, dual-processor intel board, but for the extra money you spend, you could get another computer.

But when you already have 10 in the house.... blow it all on one because it saves space that way! LOL
I need to start building rack systems and setup a couple of racks!
I agree with you on the cheap AMD thingy though.

My AMD can encode video in real time. And it is quieter than my PII 400. :)24~25Fps 640x480 DVD video. :) Step up to 720xXXX and it goes to 20~22Fps. I blew big bucks on this sys! A whole $350 on it! :) Sure I used my old DVD/CD ahd 30Gb HDs. But everything else was new. ;)

When it comes to Floating-Point power the AthlonXP kills the P4 ;)

Thats it, I worked my ass off this summer and I'm finally upgrading my P2 350 overclocked to 392. I think I will go with Intel since I haven't used a P4 machine before but I have faith in Intel. I've used p1, p2, p3 900, p3 1ghz, Athlon 550, 800, XP1900, XP1800. I'm not impressed with AMD yet, nforce is cool, maybe nforce 2 will change my mind but as soon as the 2.8 p4 comes out I may snatch up a 2.4 if they drop enough in price. I just wanna make sure I get the best. thats what I did 3 years ago and I plan on doing it again. I just wish SCSI was cheaper. the XP is the fastest I've ever used though. I just wanna test out a P4 to compare.

20th July 2002, 07:23
Wrong!
When it comes to pure floating point the AthlonXP kills the P4.
Thats why it takes a P4 running up to 700mhz faster sometimes to beat a AtlonXP in certain benchmarks.
Head over to www.hardocp.com or www.anandtech.com and do some research.
As for my computer now, it takes a P4 running at 2200-2400mhz to beat it. I have no money in this computer and its rock stable and super fast. ;)
I see myself getting a AIW 9700 and bigger harddrives in the future and thats it for now.

I have attached the SiSoft results in my computer specs (see signature link)
But there is no doubt, you get more for less when you go for AMD.

If you take the time to look carefully you will see Sandra uses SSE2 for the P4 and SSE for the AthlonXP on the Multimedia test.
On the CPU test its all good it shows two numbers for the P4 and the the one thats not for SSE2 is the one to compare to the AthlonXP ;)
Now you see how badass the AthlonXP is when it comes to Floating-Point Power. There are special tech benchmarks that show this.
I use Sandra 2002 Pro
And my computer beats the P4 2600mhz :p and im running around 950mhz slower .... tell me thats not good.

I use the same version of SiSoft. I have proved Intel to be faster than AMD you haven't no matter what you say we need some proof. (And same time try to beat the ram speed)

Intel is faster for video encoding, but IMO definately not worth the price difference.

Unlikely. Mine doesn't even win out over a P4 2.6GHz, only a 2.4GHz (on a single-cpu test that is). Show us some Sandra results to prove what you are saying.

That is indeed a kickass ram speed :D

On the CPU benchmark the AthlonXP has one score. The P4 has two setup like this xxxx/xxxx the first one is the one to compare ;)
come on guys dont make me bring in links from review sites.
This is for the Floating-point on the CPU benchmark look carefully.
The only time the P4 does good is when the software uses SSE2.
And as for Rambus (what a joke) give me a 400mhz DDR any day :D
The P4 has weaker Floating-Point are the same as a P3.
And now you see how even at 2600mhz the P4 gets beats.

CPU Arithmetic Benchmark
P4 looks like this for the Floating-Point
Whetstone FPU/iSSE2 xxxx/xxxx
The AthlonXP looks like this
Whetstone FPU xxxx
Come on guys every review site has pointed this out, why else do you think the AthlonXP running so much slower in the mhz beats it on some benchmarks are more than holds it own!
Also the Lvl-1 cache being 8kb hurts the P4 very bad....

In the CPU benchmark compare the Whetstone FPU of the AthlonXP to the P4. You will see that a AthlonXP @ 1533mhz ties the P4 @ 2600mhz
I dont lie dude and the graph shows you this so get over it.

20th July 2002, 13:12
Ok, so you are both talking about two different things. dvd2svcd is talking about real life benchmarks, while NeVeRLift is talking theoretical. Yes, AMD beats the crap out of Intel when you don't look at Intel's SSE2 score. However you can't turn off SSE2 for a program, so there's not much sense in comparing benchies without taking SSE2 into account.
Since this thread's creator asked what is fastest for video encoding, and since at least DivX5 and XviD use SSE2 optimizations the only answer here can be: Intel is fastest.

@Acaila
I proved my point.
And anything needing floating-point power will do better with the AthlonXP... take Seti or Folding for example ;)
The AthlonXP cleans house and dominates in the quickest times.
And there are some Floating-Point only benchmarks that really show just how strong the AthlonXP is :D
Sorry to ruffle some feathers there, but the bottom line is the P4 has Floating-point like a weak ole P3

Here is a very trust worthy site and super good review

Money isn't the issue so stop rambling about that. No matter what the costs, the fastest P4 is beating the fastest AMD, a weak FPU or not, SSE2 chrushes AMD in the dust, that is just how it is. Live with it.

Hi-
And if you're willing to overclock, I think a case can be made for the Northwoods matching the Athlons dollar for dollar, and fps for fps in encoding speed. You get a 1.6A or 1.8A Northwood (costing about as much as AthlonXP 2100+ or 2200+ CPUs), an inexpensive SIS based mobo, some decent DDR SDRAM and overclock the heck out of them and I defy any Athlon to match them. Of course this may come to an end when the next generation of AMD CPUs comes out.
But I think you're fighting a lost cause butting heads with dvd2svcd and his system NeVeRLiFt. That Rambus memory of his is some kick-ass stuff.
If you're curious about real world encoding speeds for different systems, go check out the CCE Speeds thread down in the Advanced DVD2SVCD Forum.

Money is an issue.
Look at the fastest Athalons price compared to the Fastest P4 price.
Double the Athalon's price (By getting two), and it's still cheaper than the fastest P4. 2 AMD 2000+'s will beat the fastest P4 into the ground.

besides, floating point doesn't make a cpu better. ok, so you have two math nerds, one is very fast and cheap and calculates numbers really well and doubles as a high tech space heater. the other calculates numbers decently well, but also is smarter. It is optimized for what computers do these days and does it effeciently while staying cool. Intel has put a assload of money into an optimized architecture. In my opinion, above 2ghz, cpu architecture becomes the selling point for me.

please remember, majagua asked for the speed of rempeg. it doesnt use sse2 (or does it?). and as you can see in dvd2svcds post the fpu of the xp2200 is twice as fast as that of the p4 2.4 .
to find a useful answer we should test the speed of rempeg and not compare any useless benchmarks.

Rambus gets beats by DDR when its running at say 333-400mhz DDR
so maybe you head over to some review sites and see for yourself.
(Are its more than holding its own) and the new chipset from nvidia called the nforce2 already talks about supporting 400mhz DDR and the new chipset from VIA does to.
And lets see..... have to make sure software has special code for my weak CPU (SSE2) or have a strong monster CPU that has it all and does not need special software. Ya I like my AthlonXP and www.Tomshardware.com done did alot testing on encoding and showed how strong the AthlonXP was.

You should really read the article about DDR versus Rambus on thg again. Rambus PC1066 beats DDR400 on every Memory benchmark! And on the other benchmarks DDR400 and Rambus PC1066 is taking turns on which is fastest (actually PC1066 wins on most tests). So please stop these false statements of yours.
