Backup DVDs in Linux

Is it possible to back up a DVD-9 to DVD-5 in Linux? I mean, is there a ripper like SmartRipper, DVD Decrypter or CladDVD, and is there a re enconding software like REMPEG or TMPEnc and is there an ifo managing program like IFO Edit?

And if there exists equivalent software like the mentioned above, could the process be faster in Linux? I suspect it would be.


Where could you get this software if it exists?

dvd ripping on linux is possible, e.g. mencoder (part of mplayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu) make possibile encoding from dvd to divx, however an utility named "transcode" (search on freshmeat) could make possible transcoding from mpeg2 to mpeg2. For the speed I think will be the same... Cpu makes difference in these king of operations

It may be... and it may not!
First time I experienced linux I had a K6-262MHz (200 overclocked;) and a really crap cd-rom. Under win9X audio ripping was impossible 'cause the os eated too much cpu time in interrupt handling causing a lot of jitter error from the cd-rom and mp3 encoding was a challenge against eternity;
under linux... bingo! it flowed smooth and softly without any error, and encoding slightly faster too. On the other hand the gui was clearly slower than win9X.
In the end, the whole thing depends from many factor, not only cpu, but it's always worth to try and see.

The part you're referring to is pipes, and yes, Linux kicks Windows ass when it comes to pipes.

Of course linux in many things is faster than windows (due also to better filesystem handling and talking with devices).
I'm also a linux fan :D
I'm able to burn a cdrom and in the meanwhile making another
iso image to burn (On windows I'm scared to play an mp3 burning a cd).
Then ripping maybe faster, but encoding is cpu dependent process
than the speed is the same.

transcode supports many input/output formats
take a look
http://www.theorie.physik.uni-goettingen.de/~ostreich/transcode/, but there is no ac3 export plugin on the site (I think this is not really a problem if you want to transcode mainly the video).
Maybe also ac3 transcoding is possibile using other tools...

for ripping you can use drip, the home page is here:

I've never tryied these tools on linux (except an old version
of drip, that seems to work)

If the near future I want make tasks like ripping/econding/transcoding
with linux, nowaday linux support to multimedia seems enough

Hihi, the part of besweet that does the ac3 encoding (since 1.4 versions) is from the ffmpeg project (http://ffmpeg.sf.net) which is clearly a Linux program.
