View Full Version : Encoding Time

bootcd

I've been reading through the posts in this forum and realise that people are encoding DVD Rips with DVD2SVCD in 3 to 4 hours. The process takes about 15 hours on my computer. I have just done Moulin Rouge PAL , and the whole process from start to finnish took 17 hours.
I am using pretty standard settings in DVD2SVCD, mainly the default, CCE 2.5, the quality is good but how come its taking so long.
Harware:
P4 1.7
512MB DDR 333 memmory
GForce 4
60GB 7200 HD
Any ideas anyone please?

maybe 3-4 hours on a 2 pass vbr with simple resize. THEY have to be talking about video ENCODEing time.

if you are using defaults then bicubic slows down the video encoding... how many passes you do slows down the encoding.. how long the movie is... there are many factors... some make the movie look better... but slow the process down... others speed the process up at the sake of quality...

id rather wait 24 hours for a great looking movie than 3-4 hours for okay-good.

Athlon XP 1700
512 ram
geforce 4 4600
80 gb 7200 hd
too much more to list :P

@bootcd take a look at this thread. I just posted my personal settings that should yield you a good copy of your dvd http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=154493#post154493

and i agree with siliconsoul said, so take that in to account also.

I do a regular movie in 1-2 hours, the entire process on a AMD 1.4Ghz/266Mhz FSB and 512MB DDR-Ram.

I always go for a CBR encoding using CCE 2.50 (VBR takes a way to long) with a bitrate no lower than 2000. This way I get good results and a fast encoding time.

and u get too many cds! cbr is fine if u do not mind using 3 cd fo movies that can fit onto 2 cds. and vbr allocates the bitrate out better

UltimateDBZ

@silicon: That may be your opinion, but everyone is entitled to their own. Pepsimaxx does it the way he prefers, and you the way you prefer, don't get the two mixed together.

@UltimateDbz I dont think siliconsoul did anything but speak the facts. Other then cbr makes to many disks thats his opinion but the fact is vbr on average for a dvd ripp will make 2 cd's instead of 3 or more that cbr would make which some people dont mind it. I myself have a 3 disk changer but still only make 2 disks no matter how long the movie is..

UltimateDBZ

I too believe it is the truth, in fact it's my opinion as well. I was just defending Pepsimaxx's opinion, is all :)

pepsimaxx
17th July 2002, 22:27
Thanks UltimateDBZ for ur posts on my behalf. :)

I do not agree that SiliconSoul just stated his facts. I qoute "and u get too many CD's!" Please notice the exclamation mark. But never mind.

My post was merely to point out that bootcd could get much faster encoding time if he used CBR. As I believe markrb has mentioned several times CBR encoding is not inferior to VBR encoding at high bitrates, all u can save is space which to some ppl. is important, and to others not.

chainsaw135
17th July 2002, 22:35
@pepsimaxx yeah i totally agree with you, its all preference. Your post so far as i can see is not worse or better then siliconsoul's. As its equal showing two different way for someone to do an encode both ways can be argued equally both ways are important because people have preference and they both have ups and downs about them. I think silicon was just pointing out another way to make dvd's but hey thats just my view of it all.

btw i said he stated an opinion during his post, but most of his statement was fact and opinions have been stated in your posts aswell but the fact is opinions are fine. Just dont let it get out of hand thats all:)

pepsimaxx
17th July 2002, 22:37
Yep I agree with u. Let's just leave it at that........the main thing is to help out bootcd and not discuss personal preferences of encoding.
:)

@pepsimaxx

The second time i replied was my opinion... not a big deal... you do it your way and ill do it mine :)

the main thing is to help out bootcd and not discuss personal preferences of encoding.

well if you do want to know "OUR" preference of how to get the best enocde you can join the thread in the advanced forum...

and if you want people to know your preference of how to get the best encode start your own thread...

Im sorry if i attacked anyone... i just have a strong opinion of how to get MY best encode... and i should not force that on anyone... and im up to listen to others and learn... thats what this forum is all about...

Thanks for all the info... I was also getting a few blocky areas in the films, but that may be down to the cheap discs I was using. I'll stick with the muti pass method, it takes a long time but the results are, on the whole, much better.
The blocking only seems to happen with films done on my computer, if the same method is used on a mate of mine's computer the results are better. Could it be my burner?? YAMAHA CRW2100S Rev: 1.0N SCSI.. 40X16X10... burnt at 4 speed useing CDRWIN 3.9A... just a thought. Anyone got any advice?

chainsaw135
18th July 2002, 22:32
@bootcd If you dont mind doing a little testing. You could do the same movie with the same settings on both your computers. Better yet just do a chapter or 2 that way you can see the results faster. Then when the movie/cue bin file is done being created. Load the movie on both machines with deamon tools or something that will load a cue/bin file. That should tell you if things are equal if not then come back here we can play around a figure out why its not ok.

I'll try that and get back to you... thanks

Same result. When done on my computer the result is OK but blocky in places... when done on my mates computer... perfect.
