View Full Version : I Can"t Get Anything To Work!

I am so frustrated! I am trying to reencode a dvd-9 to dvd-5. The movie is "The Gift". I have tried rempeg2 and I get the blocks occuring in the video. I use "Match source" and I do everything the guides tell me. I've gotten it to work with some other videos, so I know I'm doing things right some of the time. This is in the .m2v file that is produced by rempeg2, so it is not caused by Ifoedit remuxing.
Now everyone says "rempeg2 is crap, use tmpg", well, I would but it freezes everytime I use the tmpgtemplate from ifoedit. I have tried checking the I, P and B boxes, I have left just the I box checked. Doesn't matter. always freezes.
Why can't someone come up with a program that you just tell it what size you want and it rencodes the video for you.

golfextreme,
What scalefactor are you using in ReMPEG2 ? for "The Gift"
Anything less than 80% will start to throw up pixelation problems from time to time.
I guess you are using a bitrate calculator ?

Nope, I tried doing it at 90% and it still had multicolored squares popping up all over.

golfextreme,
Let's try and put this little problem into perspective.
What is your experience in using ReMPEG2, the reason I ask is, I have used it a few times, and mucked up some of the settings from time to time (much to my regret). I do note that you say you have used ReMPEG2 before.
I too have used it on several occasions, I have found 1 movie where it would not encode without pixelation problems (I tried several times).
I have a feeling that some movies just don't re encode !!
Sorry to be pessamistic.

Hi,
>Now everyone says "rempeg2 is crap, use tmpg", well, I would but it
>freezes everytime I use the tmpgtemplate from ifoedit.
..are you using an older version of ifoedit? I think >0.88 outputs templates that seem to freeze tmpgenc. even so, I would be careful when using tmpgenc. I have frequently experienced freezing problems when remuxing with ifoedit. The blocks you are experiencing may well be rempeg messing up, or a rip of a dirty / scratched DVD that results in chunks of corrupted data on your hard disk.
>Why can't someone come up with a program that you just tell it what
>size you want and it rencodes the video for you.
thats what rempeg does, really. You just have to take into account the size of extras like audio tracks etc when setting the reduction level... :)

Well, no matter what I have tried, I can't get it to work right. I am using the newest versions of all software available. rempeg just will not reencode without causing problems in the picture. The DVD I ripped from was immaculate, so it can't be that. I use all the correct settings as laid out in the guides, and it will work for many movies, but not this one. I guess I have to file it under "Will not re-encode". Thanks for the help.

The problem has been brought up many many times. You have to remove the cell id that has the company logo intro and rempeg2 just the movie. This has been the case with a handfull of newer movies

THANK YOU, p3distxii!! :D That fixed it. Why does the logo mess everything up?

p3distxii,
Quote :- You have to remove the cell id that has the company logo intro and rempeg2 just the movie.
How do you achieve this ?
I'm OK using rempeg2, but I have not come across the Warner brother logo yet.

By the way, golfextreme, I'm pleased you perseverance has paid off !! It's always nice when someone hits the nail on the head.

I think because its interlaced

HomerJ-
Because I don't have the DVD anymore just the files, I built an iso of the files and loaded it into Daemon tools, I then used DVDdecypter in ifo mode and just removed cell 1 from the rip.

golfextreme,
Thanks for the update.
I normally use smartripper, but I'll give DVDdecrypter a try.

Guys stop screwing around...
Rip the whole movie to your hard drive, then load up with IfoEdit the .ifo file of the main movie and look at the first cell/vob id, double click it to make sure it is the logo (it shouldn't be more than a minute anyhow) if it is it click on vob extras and then remove the cell id, and everything else you don't need, like extra languages etc.
Rempeg is a fine programm, but it is not the answer to some movies, though.
For instance, "The Others", the first logo is interlaced but it is joined with the first chapter so you can't remove it. Trying to reencode it won't do anygood. Braking it into cell ids will not help either, because after you put it together, where cell id is broken between to vob's you will have blocks for a few moments... It is hard to control that because you have to watch the movie to catch those... So the solution seems to be reempeg with some movies, only if it needs to be shrunk by a little bit, and CCE with others, but I've had a lot of problems with subtitles, but if you don't mind not having subtitles CCE is the way to go...

also, CCE and scenarist will allow you to keep the movie and all extras on almost all movies, while the quality is great (and now you don't even have to reauthor the dvd, and use original .ifo's)
But be ware of the subtitle problems.

Subtitles in Scenarist piss me off. I just can't get the shit right. Following the guide here:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdsubs.htm
it gets to a point where you have to use SubAdjust. It shows an example that loads a source file named eng.srt, but nowhere in the guide does it talk about creating this .srt file. The previous step leaves you with a .txt file not an .srt. I'm given up on the last 3 movies I've re-authored and just left them out, but I'd prefer to keep them in. Somebody help me out

When you first rip the subtitles, after the rip is done you have to click on "Output Format" then change the output to .srt It will give you a screen with whole bunch of different formats, by default it is I-Author form. that is why you get text only output.
