View Full Version : Here is the profile to use for making great looking high quality 1cd rips!

This is my own profile I made up and I use it for all my encoding. It makes great quality 1cd rips and thought I would share this.
You dont like it or dont like my settings dont use it. If you get some scenes that look bad then play around with the anti-shit.
Until the day XviD is ready and crowned king....Nandub is your daddy and is the master of making 1cd rips :D
I dont use Gknot. Its a great tool but I dont need it. I use DVDDecrypter, AC3dec, Lame, DVD2avi and vfapi ;) And of course Nandub! I use the BeSweetGUI for Lame and AC3dec.
Here is the profile I use, I use 700-800 bitrate for a 2hr movie and I usually cut the credits off. I only use smart-resize using precise bilinear. And deinterlace or inverse telecine if needed. I use 640x288 or 512x384 depending on the movie. I use a crosspoint 230.
My Anti-shit settings are 21/1/0. I use either CBR or VBR mp3 for audio. Audio is usually 60-100mb so you have 600mb or more for the video. Like I said I cut off the credits and using 700 bitrate and this profile makes great looking 1cd rips. I will compare my 1cd rips to any 2cd rip, they just look that good.
Enjoy!

I usually don't read the Nandub section so would not have noticed your post if you had not also posted a link to it in the Gnot section. I can't resist expressing a difference of opinion though. ;) Using Gnot + divx 5.02 pro I make 1 cd rips that are indistinguishable from the original dvd excepting for the audio which I always downmix to stereo vbr 128. And when I say they are indistinguishable I mean it. I have a dual monitor setup and play the dvd on one screen, the divx on the other for a few scenes. If I can see a difference the divx gets deleted and I start over. I've only had to do that twice due once to not knowing all about deinterlacing, and one other time that I though qpels were a useful feature. Other than that I have 20 perfect rips sofar. All 695mb as I save a tiny bit of room for the codec + autorun files on each disk.
Please don't get me wrong. I am NOT saying your method sux, or mine is better. But Nandub is most certainly NOT "my daddy". ;) Other methods can provide good quality as well. That being said thank you for sharing your settings with the community. Only wish more people tried to be helpful in this manner so we would have more quality rips floating around. ;)

Thank you.
I dont like DivX5, the 5.02 Pro is not as buggy at least. As for quality.... DivX5 always loses detail and looks hmmm whats the word blurry or just fuzzy with the detail.
Not to mention DivXNetwork souled out.
I have a 160GB FTP and anytime you wanna compare drop me a PM. I to have rips that when watched will make you think its the DVD. I have never seen a good 1cd rip made with DivX5. I have seen some good ones with XviD.
Now we have different opinions and thats all good. I think we need to trade a movie. Would a movie around 2hrs work for you? It has to fit on a 700mb cd. I guess we both use VBR mp3 so thats fine.
If we both have the same movie thats fine. Are I will pick my best and you pick yours. Fair nuff?
Also I will compare a 1cd rip made using Fairuse ;) showing it can more than hold its own if you would like to see it.
I would like to say I'm taking the time to make 1cd rips using XviD and DivX5. I have did my research and browsed the forums and collected data. Once I have a great looking 1cd rip with these codecs I will post the settings.
The DivX5 is almost done... and the XviD I think is done.
I will be done testing in the next few days and will post the results and settings.
Hope people enjoy this and maybe now we can all use either codec and make some nice looking 1cd rips.
And if your rips do look this good I would like to know the settings you used. Maybe you can make a post and share these settings with everyone.

i am eager to read them too. for, until now, i have not been able to do such high quality rips (:(),which is the reason why i switched to xvid because it seemed more predictable - and i hate:angry: the divx4,5-moving-background problem.

This is very interesting what I have found out. Just so you know I have it so only the DivX5.02 Pro codec is installed. And I have been messing with it doing videocapture. Also I sorta have this thing. I like knowing everything and knowing if something can do something.
After alot of testing and tweaking I have DivX5 working for videocapture and using B-frames, and some other settings.
I have took this setup that looks best for videocapture and used it on this rip and choose a 700bitrate (its the same movie I encoded with Nandub and will encode with XviD, its 2hrs long)
Needless to say with these settings I just made a very nice looking 1cd rip using DivX5 2pass encode. But it does not beat my Nandub rip. I dont know what all problems you have with DivX5, but to me the detail is sorta blurred or not as sharp. The moving background is there ever so slightly. Still this is a very high quality 1cd rip and I just proved to myself that DivX5 can do 1cd rips. maybe after I post my settings it can be even better.(with some peoples feedback) But IMHO its very good ;)
BAH cant believe it!
Now for the XviD... I think I have some sweet settings and will start the encode now.
The movie is Gone In 60sec and I'm trying to make the best 1cd rips I can using DivX5, XviD and Nandub.
I consider my Nandub rips perfection. As for the settings I use with XviD and Divx5 I followed the guides and browsed the forums taking notes and testing. So I may not have the best settings.... but then that means someone is talking crap in there posts ;)
DivX5 has not beat Nandub in quality. I will post back once the XviD encode is done.
After I post the settings I used. If there is something I have wrong set me straight and I will redo the encode.
Need sleep :D

Just one question: why do you convert from YUV to RGB?

16th July 2002, 06:41
Hi pal!
That's very interesting idea to chage YUV -> RGB.
I'll try it.
But ... I not agree to use bilinear filtering, 'cause u will get a burry picture. I'm using just precise bicubic filtering for 1 and for 2 CD's rips too.
Just another question... Are you using some other aditional filters in NanDub? e.g smart smoother, warp sharper , 2D cleaner ?

I don't think I'm really doing anything "special" with my encodes. I use Gordian Knot with divx 5.02 pro. I enable bi-directional encoding and Global Motion Compensation. On those movies (and there have been a few) that I see the moving pattern I simply re-encode with psychovisual enhancements set to either medium, or if really stubborn artifacts still exist, then strong. I try to stay around .17bits/pixel with at least a 70% quality ratio on compressability check. Maybe I'm just not noticing the artifacts that bother everyone else so much, but I have been trying to find what you could be talking about. And I really can't see anything in the encodes I kept.
Note: I never said divx 5 was "better" than Nandub. ;) I only pointed out that it was not "my daddy" as the earlier post stated. I do actually believe they both have the strenghts, and I happen to prefer divx5 and the ease of use I get doing it with Gnot where I don't have to baby step through the process each time and the program takes care of assigning the MAX bitrate to the movie to attain the size I want.

Wrong you use precise bilinear when you resize to a smaller resolution and use bicubic when you resize to a larger resolution.
And none of my movies are blurry. There all crisp and sharp and have better detail than DivX5 or XviD IMHO.

oh god! i was just waiting for this to happen because it seems to be always happening. at some point somebody thinks that somebody else is doing something wrong, superflous, beside the point, ... and then the thread collapses into some kind of emotional youstupidblownasshole-conversation.
why? for god's sake? it is not necessary and it is also not useful. you can bet, if posts of a certain style, kind or type start to threaten the purose of the forum, the moderators will step on the break. you could also report a thread to the moderators if you feel that they have overlooked something. instead you start generating noise (as i do now too, unfortunately) and hence make the thread more difficult to read. you make it less useful for others.
nobody forces you to read a thread or use the information. if you don't like it go away but don't start behaving off-topic

Man ... nobody said your setting is bad ... but there is one rule!
There is no "universal" setting for all movies. Setting which is PERFECT for one movie, has not to be good for other one.
For each movie you're gonna rip it, the SBC setting may be different, if you wanna reach perfect quality.
Acaila
16th July 2002, 09:53
I'm not one to brush away good suggestions, so I decided to indulge you and try out these Nandub settings of yours. I honestly admit to not being much of an SBC wiz, so undoubtedly you can get better quality with it.
I've seen a DivX3 version of Gone in 60 Sec. and I admit it looked quite good....until you frooze the picture. I guess DivX3 is pretty good at masking those blocks during playback, but a good rip shouldn't have them in the first place.
I ran it over the X-Men (only 100 minutes) to compare it to my XviD rip and I was quite disappointed. Granted, the stills and low motion scenes looked very nice and almost noise free, but every single high motion scene looked downright ugly.
I don't know if you've seen this particular movie, but the intro with the (extremely high motion) tunnel effect looks like a big chessboard with DivX3. As far as detail is concerned I couldn't see a difference in the amount of detail between the DivX3 and XviD version, only the XviD version had a bit more pixel noise.
If you boast that this script of yours can fit 2 hour movies on 1 CD with high quality, then you and I have a very different view of what 'high quality' really is. I made it easy, only a 100 min movie, I could have taken The Mummy which is 119 minutes and even XviD has trouble with getting that look good, so I shudder to think what DivX3 would make of it.
But like I said, I'm not an SBC wiz, so it could have been just me messing something up. So I'm open to suggestions to improve these settings, can you give me recommendations to improve my high motion scenes?

I deinterlace or inverse telecine if needed. I use 640x288 or 512x384 depending on the movie. Besides this nothing changes in my settings except the bitrate and and anti-shit settings.

Hi Acaila-
Well, at least you gave him the benefit of the doubt and tried out the settings before realizing they were no good.
So I'm open to suggestions to improve these settings
There will no suggestions. His .vcf is set in stone. Sasovics said it best:
There is no "universal" setting for all movies.
Remember-this is the same person that until 2 days ago believed that DivX 5.02 was garbage and that XviD wasn't quite ready for prime time. And not only that, but he flamed the DivX 5.02 and XviD users IN THEIR OWN FORUMS. And now he's seen the light? Now he's got religion? And we're supposed to take him seriously? And he has credibility? And he deserves respect? See, the problem is that others might actually pay attention to what he says. They may think that because he's so opinionated that he actually knows what he's talking about. One example:
why do you convert from YUV to RGB? And That's very interesting idea to chage YUV -> RGB. I'll try it.
And what was the answer?
I opened the saved profile file up and copied it all and pasted it.
No, the reason is that he has to use Full Processing which demands the YUV to RGB color conversion (and slows down the encoding). Why does he have to use Full Processing? Because he's frame serving with a VFAPI! How quaint.
No, in my opinion he deserves all of the flames he's getting and is going to get.

Hi and thanks for posting.
I guess I will ask you what bitrate you used. With that short of a movie it should be 800bitrate or more. Also did you use my profile as it is? Did you add the anti-shit settings? I only change these two things for each movie. I also use smart resize w/ precise bilinear.
Besides this did the movie need deinterlaced or could you or inverse telecine? What resolution did you use? I use 640x288 or 512x384 depending on the movie.
I have DivX5 making nice looking 1cd rips now.
And I think I almost XviD down pat.

@NeverLift:
Gone in 60s is a dark movie'Imean that the video is dark, it not a great challenge to make a good rip, altought even for a dark movie, 2 hours is long.
For me ,and for many, I think 1 cd rip limit is 1h45 and sometimes it too much. It also depend on the format of the movie(ie 1.85 or 2.35).
I never use a vdf file, because setting are differetn for each files. I also often choose a max drf factor of 8 for 1 cd rips and It gives a quite good quality
Thank you for posting your settings.

@NeVeRLiFt:
You're right a little more details would have been in order.
- PAL Region 2 (so no IVTC, deinterlacing)
- Resolution: 640x272
- Bitrate: 900 (came out as around 600MB)
- I did not set any anti-shit settings, so it used whatever you had in that profile or whatever the default in Nandub was. I'd have to chck when I get back home to see what that was.
- I used SimpleResize for this (to get it done as fast as possible), normally I use Bicubic(0,0.5).
I even cut off the credits, which I normally don't do, to be able to use as much bits on the main movie as possible (total frames: 136801 @25fps).

And now for some competition. Heres my base 1 cd rip profile that I made. you gota play with the bitrate and crop resize of course after you load it. Using this profile i got 3000 miles to graceland (2 hours 2 minute) onto 1 cd and over 60% divx quality. Lots of action, gun shots, fire etc, (5xx by 2xx res i forget exactly which)

Heres the deal all your "But theres blocks in it" type people.
1 cd is massiv massive compression form the original. When done right, they look whicked when you watch them. (BTW watching them is the intent after all)
With any 1 cd rip, if you pause the frames, you are gonna find blockiness, that just a fact.
Whats also a fact is if you cant see the blocks when the movie is playing then you hjave a virtually perfect rip IMO.
If you are too much of a perfectionist, to go through pausing frames in vdub, and going "look! blocks!" then you need to get out of the game of the 1 CD rip because it just isn't for you.
Let's leave these 1 cd rip discussions to people who care about what the movie looks like when actualy watched....

HI, I used these settings for a 1hr 45 minute movie that ended up being 1hr 40 mins after I cut the credits. I used vStrip, DVD2Avi, BeSweet/SSRC/lame abr 128 (I downsample from 48kHz to 44.1kHz, and no the sync doesn't get screwed up), mp3gain (if necessary), avisynth, gordianknot and nandub. I use Gknot to make the cropping and bilinear resize values 640 x 272. The crosspoint in nandub was 255. Sorry if my post is incoherent, I'm taking a break from studying its 1:45 a.m.

First off, this is a NanDub script for DivX3 that Neverlift has cross-posted to the GKnot, DivX5, and probably a few other threads. It goes without saying that the guy should be ignored.
I dare say that XviD or GKnot DivX5 (or manual Avisynth to DivX5 which I use) will always produce better 1CD rips than this script. When you get down to that low a bitrate, DivX 5's GMC and B-frames help a lot in my experience, and using Avisynth to keep the colorspace in YUY2 (which is a good idea to begin with) makes a noticable difference in dark scenes.
There are some hardcore NanDub users who will tell you that you can always get a better rip with NanDub, but they will ALWAYS admit that there is no one script that will give you great NanDub quality, ESPECIALLY with 1CD rips. NanDub is an art that requires a lot of tweaking to get great results. I guarantee that GKnot or XviD would do a better job than Neverlift's script 99% of the time.
Come on, he actually argues that you should convert to RGB and you should always use bilinear when you scale down video. I shudder to think of what kind of rips he has on the site he's bragging about. I wish he'd post some clips or screenshots of these "DVD quality" 1CD rips so everybody could get a good laugh :)

(believe me, I have the same heatsink that came with a 7000RPM Delta fan, and before I replaced the fan, the noise was unbearable, even after I put a potentiometer on the thing and took it down to 5000RPM)

I've seen part of a 1cd nandub rip from Neverlift. The movie was "Cannonball Run". The quality was amazing, especially since the film is an early 80s movie. Yes, we all know this.

You can do anything right here and get very constructive
replies to your postings if you know how to post.
>its just wrong are gets nit-picked to death
No, it just gets nit-picked because you donīt reply
to postings. You just repost full postings every time and answer a line of text that doesnīt fit in.
Wanna some example where you donīt reply correctly ?
Q: Just one question: why do you convert from YUV to RGB?
A: I opened the saved profile file up and copied it all and pasted it.
Man, do you really know about colorspace and all this stuff ?
We (the users of the doom9 bb) are mostly VERY experienced peoples when it comes to things like video encoding, filtering, etc.
So you donīt get away by posting something like "Here is the profile to use for making great looking high quality 1cd rips". We all know that there is not THE profile for making great 1 CD rips. Quality of rips depend also heavily on your viewing behaviour. Example: Some people like "sharp" movies. So they use higher resolutions and may be soft bicubic resize. Some people can live with a softer looking movie and use a much lower res and bilinear resize.
So this posting
Wrong you use precise bilinear when you resize to a smaller resolution and use bicubic when you resize to a larger resolution
is pure B$
@brett: Your a loser and a trouble maker.
I really ask myself who the looser and trouble maker is in here. This is a somewhat ironic sentence.
>or someone ruins the posts and no one gets any useful help from the post.
Actually the only one that ruins many posts and doesnīt provide any useful help is YOU.
Also very ironicly.
NL, you give me a good laugh all the time, really :)
And one final note:
Learn to make up your mind and donīt change your opinion all the time like a flag waving in the storm.
First DivX5 is crap. Then itīs good. The same thing about your "straight DivX captures" quality in this funny thread entitled "Straight DivX is best". First it was GOOD quality. After a while it came out that quality is "somewhat nice". etc.
The most disturbing thing in your postings (as over in the Rage3D forum): Many of your settings are plainly wrong and/or useless (as pointed out in my PM related to your suggested DivX5 capture settings). So you donīt help newbies. You just mislead them.
Now someone might close this thread because of flaming but this had to be written.
Over and out,
D$
P.S.: Still one question: How can you work with a PC that has a 7000 RPM fan ? I had a 5000 RPM fan mounted at my GF4 and removed it because of noise. A 7000 RPM fan makes more noise than a starting aircraft.
P.P.S.: Most people donīt need or want to "compare samples" because we all KNOW what we talk about and what quality to expect from different settings we talk about because we have done this all before by ourselves :p

What does it matter if NeVeRLiFt uses VFAPI or AVISynth? He likes the quality that Precise Bilinear resizing gives, and that only works in RGB colorspace. Whether you agree with that resizing method or not, he believes it looks better than the rest, and he sticks with it. Everyone here has a prefered resizer and no one talks down about that to anyone else. I don't use Nandub anymore because of future compatibility reasons, but it did make nice looking 1 CD rips.

You have to realise that is not true in this case. When you HAVE to do the conversion because the resize filter ONLY works in RGB, the entire speed advantage of AVISynth is lost. I'm not trying to get people pissed at me for defending NeVeRLiFt, but twice in this thread you talked about the speed difference, but in this case it is making you sound like you don't know what you are talking about.

Head Hunter:
Actually, if you use VirtualDub in any mode besides "Fast Recompress," you could say that you are at the very least losing the speed advantage of AviSynth, even if you are using no filters at all. If you test, you will see that "Fast Recompress" mode (with no colorspace conversion) will run faster, produce a slightly different filesize (usually very slightly smaller), and will have slightly better looking dark scenes than "Full Processing" mode. I'm not sure if this means that VirtualDub always converts to RGB when in "Full Processing" mode or not, but there certainly is a difference, even if you're just using VirtualDub's filters to resize.
Besides, the real point DarkSoul was making is the fact that Neverlift speaks as though he is the ultimate authority on DivX encoding, yet he was not even aware of what colorspace conversion was, let alone its implications. No matter what you think of anybody's personal opinions, you have to admit that those interested in an easy 1CD ripping method would get much better results with GKnot or XviD than trying to use a generic NanDub script. Everybody here except NeverLift is in agreement on the fact that NanDub is suitable mostly for those who understand all its inticacies and can tweak the script on a case-by-case basis.

It's really a shame to see NeverLift's threads turn into flames just because he can't respond appropriately.
Many people are actually trying to help others on this forum, and it is very frustrating to see NeverLift post, because his statements are deliberately misleading at times. At best, he is quite often misinformed. The situation is genuinely sad, because if you try to help others by pointing out where NeverLift is wrong, he ignores all the legitimate points and turns it into a personal attack.
NeverLift has been backed into a corner as far as this thread is concerned. Look at his posts. Several people have explained to him why he is wrong, but he is basically saying that they are jealous of him because he can get "great results" with his script. People have stated legitimate reasons why this is not a valid claim, and he has nothing to say. He has reduced himself to saying that VirtualDub's Precise Bilinear "looks sweet." This is not something that can be argued with. According to NeverLift, it is worth converting colorspace and wasting time just because Precise Bilinear "looks sweet."
Of course, NeverLift has admitted he doesn't understand colorspace conversion. He's even admitted that he doesn't even know how to use AviSynth!!! How can he be so sure that VDub's Precise Bilinear looks better than AviSynth's resize filters if he hasn't even tried AviSynth?
That is why NeverLift's threads turn into flames, because the only way he can respond to legitimate criticism is by resorting to ad hominem attacks.

The way you go about making a 1cd rip and having high quality is my way. The way I do it nothing is discarded. Vfapi does not discard anything to make it go faster.

Interesting...
The fact is that AviSynth goes faster and doesn't discard anything. If anything "discards information," it is your use of VFAPI and colorspace conversion. Just a few posts back, you said you were "keeping your eye on AviSynth," as though you might actually try to learn how it worked. It seems you have givin up on that approach, though, and decided to just say VFAPI is better without knowing the facts.
Again, you have proven that you don't know what you are talking about, and again you are claiming that your method is the best when your method is slower and preserves less information than several other modern methods which are clearly described on Doom9's site. Can you at least admit that a newbie looking for a 1cd rip method should try Doom9's guides first?
This forum is here to help people. I have come here for help several times and gotten great suggestions. The problem with your posts, NeverLift, is that often you should be ASKING the questions instead of acting like you know everything. It would be fine if you said, "Hey, I get great results with this NanDub script! Try it and see what you think!" That is not what you do, however. You insist that your method is THE BEST, and you refuse to accept any criticism of obvious dificiencies in your methods.
I understand that trying to converse with you is useless, so if you feel the need to reply, let's try to keep your response on-topic. Specifically:
Please, for the benefit of the forum, explain to us why VFAPI is better quality and what AviSynth discards.
And once again someone who has to comment another topic with his "BUT I KNOW IT BETTER" shit...Never made a suggestion, posted settings which seems to work best for him and wanted it to share it with others, if the quality you exspected doesnt come out at the end so just leave the topic alone and try something else...Avisynth may work better for some people, others prefer other methods...

Doom9's DVD > nandub guide says to use vfapi, not avisynth.
Just a thought. Oh and as far as the lost information when using avisynth, i think he is referring to YUV in itself, which does indeed discard information to speed things up. (Once again though information the human eye is not supposed to notice)
Never lift never said his profile was best. He never said it was ultimate. He never said his way was the only way to get the best results. He said it prodeced excellent 1 CD rips and that is exactly what it does.

The original MPEG-2 video (DVD) exists in YV12 color format. To be able to use it with Avisynth it must be converted to YUY2 format. This is a lossy conversion, but since both formats are YUV the amount of information discarded is negligible.
Now, to be able to use vfapi the format needs to be converted from YV12 to RGB (RGB24 I believe). This is also a lossy conversion but one to a very different format, so a lot more information is discarded (and also a lot is interpolated).
The reason that anything operating in YUV is faster than RGB is because YUV stores less information explicitly and calculates the rest, whereas in RGB all information is stored.
Since all codecs (at least the ones we're talking about here) can handle input in YUV there's really no reason to convert to RGB unless you need it for some filter that can only operate in RGB.
So basically to get an MPEG-4 output that is as close to the original as possible we should not perform colorspace conversions at all and do everything in YV12. But since there's no tool available that can do this (and definately no filters to edit the video), Avisynth (and therefor YUY2) is the next best thing.

I understand what you're saying, so I'll give NeverLift the benefit of the doubt, but wherever he got his info, he obviously didn't read very far if he thinks that converting to RGB is a better solution.
Acaila:
Ahh, so that's why AviSynth says you have to crop in widths divisible by 2 because YUY2 only stores color info for pairs of pixels... And now I remember the Huffy codec saying that technically YUY2 is a little lossy, but it's better than selecting RGB.
Is there a particular reason that none of the software has the ability to function in YV12 color?

Ahh, so that's why AviSynth says you have to crop in widths divisible by 2 because YUY2 only stores color info for pairs of pixels...Actually I think you can crop even in multiples of 1 (the resize filter will interpolate the rest what it misses), but the final codec in-/output must be at least multiples of 2 because otherwise it won't be compressed correctly (unless you use VDub/Nandub in full processing in which case you'll get a RGB output and resolution can then also be odd numbers).
Is there a particular reason that none of the software has the ability to function in YV12 color? Now that I think of it, I believe there's one tool that can convert directly in YV12 (XMPEG?), but mostly making filters that work in YV12 is quite complicated, or so I've heard. Trbarry has made some inquiries regarding this, so he might one day make some (I hope :)).

Woohaaa.....

Nellie: I tried your settings using a 87 min movie from DVD ("Commando" with Arnold Schwarzenegger). For resolution I used 640x336 Bilinear and your Antishit settings. Tell you what ? It looked TERRIBLE. It couldnīt compare to my DivX 5.02 Pro encoded version by any means.
We all know that the quality is there but defenitely NOT with your profile. If I had a faster webaccess I would send you some of my DivX to show you what good quality looks like.
Your da man, Nellie ! ROTFLMAO
@all: Please stop nitpicking about things like color space conversion and so on. We all (well nearly all) know that there canīt be such a thing as a perfect profile. A good point to start with for Nandub are the AVISynth scripts generated by GKnot.
BTW: One thing has be completely forgotten in this "funny" thread. Nellie claims that "I use 640x288 or 512x384 depending on the movie".
Letīs look at the fact:
For each movie there is a "perfect" balance between resolution, quality and filesize. This can be "calculated" by using GKnot with itīs compressibility test. So you can find out at what resolution you can get the maximum quality for your targeted movie size. Without this a too high resolution means loosing details while a too low resolution means wasting bitrate because the codec canīt compress what isnīt there.
There are two ways to get constant quality:
1) Vary your resolution when you care about filesize (The way GKnot works with itīs compressibility check)
2) Encoding at CQ mode and donīt care about filesize.
Anything else with result in lower quality or wasted bitrate.
@NL: Be4 you ask again whatīs my point here: Even if your profile might (magicly) produce "high quality 1 cd rips" is basicly useless without a resolution that fits to the compressibility of the movie. So using your profile without GKnot is even more useless.
@newbies: Stick either to DivX5 or GKnot. Theyīll provide good quality even without NLīs "magic 1cd" profile.

I use the same resolution and all my rips look great and have a quality of 50-85% so I must being doing something right... and I dont need or use Gknot.
If the DVD is not widescreen then the 512x384 is a correct resolution to use.
For example,
For Widescreen take the top res EG 720 or 640 divide by 16 Multiply by 9 divide by 1.25 = Widescreen
For TV take the top res EG 720 or 640 divide by 16 Multiply by 9 divide by .75 = TV
Works like a charm ;)

Why the new name, Neverlift?
I think everybody on this forum (except you?) is smart enough to understand that there is no "correct resolution" for every movie! As Darksoul stated, it totally dependant on filesize, compressability, and aspect. GKnot calculates compressability and aspect ratio information, and it's a great place to start for finding the right resolution.
Honestly, do you really think all "widescreen" movies should use 640x272 (2.35:1) or 640x288 (2.22:1)? Half the movies out there are 1.85:1! Do you think people should crop the top and bottom of the movie off? And movies do not always fit perfectly into 2.35:1 Cinemascope, 1.85:1 Flat, or 1.33:1 TV aspects. Some are wider, some are more narrow. Just as there is no one "perfect profile" for ripping a movie, there is also no one "perfect resolution." To get the best results, you must understand this and choose your settings on a case-by-case basis.
Please stop spreading this ridiculous information. You're completely wrong.

And this is not Lift btw, I'm just a fellow shadowrunner who felt like sharing his thoughts.
Bottom line is Lift's profile works and makes very nice 1cd rips.
I used his settings for his DivX5 rips and made a very nice 1cd rip to.

@Shadowrunner:
I donīt care if youīre a fellow shadowrunner or a another part of the split personality of Nellie.
To me things like that:
>>/me gets out his pin and pops the bighead
sounds pretty much like NL. May be you two should spent less time together. ;)
The part of doom9īs guide youīre refering to is pretty old. Iīm too lazy to explain this resolution stuff again. Take a look at the way GKnot calculates the correct cropping to keep up AR and youīll find out what I mean. Believe me: Anything else is wrong. Movies will be correct in 640x288 or 640x272 if the movie has the related AR but in many movies you need a tool like GKnot to calc the correct AR. Esp if you want to keep height dividable by 16 and width dividable by 32. Everthing else is WRONG.
>If the DVD is not widescreen then the 512x384 is a correct resolution to use
LOL, and what about the 4:3 movies that have black bars ?
BTW: 720x576 isnīt 4:3 in square pixels but have a look at GKnot before you discuss things like that with me.
>Bottom line is Lift's profile works and makes very nice 1cd rips.
>I used his settings for his DivX5 rips and made a very nice 1cd rip to.
Fine, if it works out for you. I tried his Nandub profile (just to make shure) and the quality was CRAP. I did a lot of movies with Nandub, GKnot, DivX5, etc. and know what I talk about. I think that NL hasnīt invent good 1 CD rips and there are MANY other ways to encode a good 1 CD movie. I only wanted people to look beyond NLīs profile. Nellie isnīt even able to discuss. He just can repeat and repeat himself. So Iīm off and donīt waste my time anymore with this BS. IMHO NL is just WAY TO AROGANT to listen to other peoples. Heīs motto seems to be: "Iīm the best. F... the rest".
cu,
D$
P.S.: @Brett: you also shouldnīt waste your time anymore.

Like any of this matters now that Microsoft has Pioneer making DVD units that support WMV9.

Pioneers line of DNE products, will be launched later this year as the first home theater device to include playback support for Microsoft Windows Media Video technology.

Maybe I should have hosted some samples sooner to shut some of these people up? ;)
Anyway here they are now and to bad I got banned over this...
:(
At least XviD is alot better now and people can use it. So just forget about Nandub or Fairuse and move on... hell we even have a DivX5.03 Pro now!
EDIT:
And we have the KISS DivX player out now :D

Hi NL,
Itīs too bad that this "discussion" ended that way.
I should have made my point of view more clear. I donīt to start any "flamewar" again.
At least XviD is alot better now and people can use it. So just forget about Nandub or Fairuse and move on... hell we even have a DivX5.03 Pro now!
That was my point: Itīs not the codec itself. Again: There isnīt THE PROFILE to make great looking 1 CD rips and there will never be one. Each movie compresses differently. So each movie needs different combination of filters and a different output res. What I agree to: There are standard values for each codec that provide good results but no "fixed resolution" encoding will ever produce the best looking results.
And we have the KISS DivX player out now
The biggest problems with all hardware players that havenīt been solved:
Full support for all DivX features (QPel, GMC, etc).
Unless we see hardware players that support ALL codecs currently available I doubt that theyīll have any chance. And what about upcoming codecs like H.264 ?
I highly doubt that weīll see a hardware DivX player with upgradeable decoder in near future.

ive kept my mouth shut on this thread till now, and all i have to say is....
1. that lord of the rings clip is quite good quality, though i see some pixels and a few blocks its not bad. however i would like to see a clip from it that has more motion.
2. your matrix clip looks like crap, the motion shows pixels out the ass and its not very clean.(EDIT) on that matrix rip, ide suggest you crop the black line out from the bottom of the video, it makes the movie harder to compress and the movie would look much better without it.(EDIT)
3. ive tried your settings on a few movies, lost in space 1hour 43 mins without credits and starship troopers 1 hour 59min without credits. both looked like crap just like your matrix clip. maybe you should try one of these movies. the only way ive been able to get good looking 1 cd rips of these movies is to drop the resolution or by using rv9. maybe you can do better.
your doing about the same thing everyone else on this forum is doing but everyone else doesnt post threads thinking they have it all figured out and they have the best way of ripping dvds. we come here and interact with others to learn, you seem to want to teach, if you do want to teach ide suggest staying in this part of the forum---->Noobs. @NeVeRLiFt
ive looked at your clips more, and im sure this should be left unsaid but i feel i must say it. i am not saying this to be mean im just telling you the truth, IMHO.
the matrix clip you posted, dude no joke, ide be embarrassed to post that clip on this forum thinking its quality was "good". that clips quality is "poor". if i encoded a movie that looked like that ide delete it and try again.
this is just my opinion however, i would have dropped the resolution, or maybe used a good resize filter just to get the compressibility up to over 60%, yours is around 52%, or it looks like around that to me..

Heh...
This thread is over 6 months old, you realize. Funny that I'm still subscribed to it.
It's better just to forget about it when you see Neverlift post. I don't know if troll is the appropriate word, but he's an instigator. He likes to brag and start flame wars, then when every single person on the forum is telling him he's wrong, he whines that he was trying to be helpful.
Over a year ago he claimed he had straight-to-DivX captures that were perfect quality, but all he ever posted was a high-bitrate 320x240 sample that was a full 2-seconds out of sync. I don't think things are any different these days. Thank God I've long since moved to the DVD-R forum. He'll probably invade that next.

did you mean post some samples OR STFU?
all i have is free web hosting so they are small, about 2 second clips with no sound.
i tried to get some clips with motion in them so take a look.
your going to have to copy and paste these urls into your browser window because the free
web service i have doesnt let you link to files in your folder from a diffrent webpage.

all anyone would have to do is encode matrix just as you have but remove that black line on the bottom and they would get a better encode then you did. those black lines are very hard to compress.

Dude I'm not perfect ok! Never in any of my posts have I claimed to be and I have not acted like some know it all or (are) :P some great teacher. I just shared my profile/settings and method in some posts.
At the time XviD was not so good. FYI XviD is nice now and helluva alot better ;)
I ripped alot DVD's and so did some friends of mine, we all tested and retested and this method works for any DVD, using either a 640x288/272 or 512x384 depending if its 16:9 or 4:3 works well enough and will be close enough and look fine.
All a person would need to do with this profile is adjust Anti-Shit and the Bitrate.... after doing this any DVD should turn out great with a quality rating of 50-85% in Nandub everytime. Watching a DivX on a TV using TV-out :D trust me these look great, so many times I have messed with people and had them ask is that the DVD ;)
I just tried to help people out, at the time alot of people where asking for advice and dude the response they where getting.... well you see how bad this forum can get.
You know that black bar is a funny story... at the time I had a 17" monitor I sold it and was gonna get a 19" or 21" but something happened and I never did and I was stuck using this old 14" monitor that could barely handle 640x480 @75hz and this made cropping a pain as things where going off the screen and out of my view and I had to move it around and try and see it.

i never said you had said you where perfect, but you brought this thread back up, not me. you posted clips so i was just telling you what i think honestly.

So, you obviously understand how futile it is to reason with someone who claims to be an authority on DivX yet doesn't even understand how to crop. Don't get sucked into arguing with him. It's a waste of brain power. Proving him wrong just makes him change his argument.
For example, he says he's got the best looking rips. He is proven by several to be wrong. He then says he was just trying to be helpful for noobs.
He goes back to saying he's got the best looking rips. Someone else proves him wrong. He no longer says he has the best rips, but he says that they look OK on TV-Out.
He waits awhile and goes back to saying he's got the best looking 1CD rips. He is proven wrong. He says "Hey, I'm not perfect!"
You see, almost everything Neverlift has said on this board has been proven wrong. He's been backed into the corner so many times that a few times he's basically just said, "Well, quality is subjective and I think my rips look nice so screw off!" There is no arguing with him. The best thing to do is ignore him. Then he won't post as much, and new people won't be as likely to be hurt by his misinformation.

o ya, now i remember your point in this thread.
you said something about 1 profile to encode any movie to "good" quality. that would mean your clips prove you WRONG. the first clip is a good clip of lotr, but as its title says, 2cd version.
ok, fine, cool, whatever its still atleast watchable. the other clip however, well i think you know how i feel about your matrix clip.
(EDIT)the only clip you posted from a movie encoded using your profile isnt "good" quality.(EDIT)
so you posting your clips prove you wrong, not right. im sorry but thats just the way it is.
and i did post some clips a few replies up, are you lost little boy? do you need help finding your mom?
(EDIT)and as far as "trolling" ide like to point outyou have more then 30 more posts then i do and we registered about the same time, not even counting the posts you laid on everyone before you registered, so if anyones a "troller" it would have to be YOU.(EDIT)

The original direction this thread went when it was created already resulting in bickering back and forth.
NeVeRLiFt, ever since you re-registered you seemed to behave admirably well (and I'd like you continue with that attitude), but bringing this thread back to life is something we can all live without. Once again the direction this thread goes to is where it left off before being revived. Don't make the same mistakes you did back then, just let it rest.
This thread no longer serves any purpose except to keep everyone's testosteron levels up. So it is hereby closed.
