Bit about the bitrate

I was wondering that should I change the bitrate in the bitrate tab as follow:

Max 2530
Minimum 2230
Min Avg 2230 (Ticked)
Max Average 2230

Will this result in better picture? I do not care how many CDs I have to use, I just want the best quality possible? I am doing 4 passes (I have a pentium III 733 mhz and more than 4 passes will take eternity!)

What is the best setting for bitrate for best picture possible?

Does lowering the minimum downwards effect the quality?

As posted MANY times, if size doesn't matter, do a CBR-encode with the highest bitrate your DVD-Player is capable of. So you will get best quality and as a side effect shorter encoding time.
If you want to stay in the SVCD-specs, do a CBR of 2756-AudioRate.

I haave tried CBR (Using CCE) and the quality is no way near as VBR. Do you mean CBR using CCE?

btw: Your settings above will do a CBR-encode with 2230, because you set avg fix to 2230 (minavg AND maxavg=2230) and because the encoder can't use any rate lower than 2230 (min=2230), it also cant use any rate higher than 2230, otherwise it wouldn't be able to keep its average. So in the end you will do a CBR, but it will last 5 times longer.

Yes, CBR with CCE.
A CBR with 2530 can not be worse than an VBR with 2530 max!
But this point was discussed often, just try to do a search.

Thanks for that Labersack. What you said makes sense but CBR with four passes is much better that with same setting and CBR ticked in the encoder tab. With CBR ticked the vertical lines and blocks were very much visible. How do you expain this?
