cd-r burning

:confused: I'm new to cd-burning and i was wondering if it is possible to encode divx or mpeg movies as dvd and burn them onto a cd-r to make them compatible with all dvd players, if it is what software would i need to use

divx: no [EDIT: well, yes.. but you'd have to transcode back to mpeg and that would impact quality]
mpeg: yes and no.

You want to burn something compatible with all dvd players -- that's just not possible. This is because not all standalone dvd players are physically capable of reading CD-R or CD-RW discs. For example, I have 2 players, one can only read CD-RW discs, the other can't read either type. A database of standalone players and their capabilities (disc types supported, and data formats supported) can be found at www.vcdhelp.com -- you can search by brand, model, disc type, or data format.

Formats you can create with your CD burner include miniDVD, VCD, and SVCD, as well as others... I don't burn for standalone use, but many Doom9 Forum members use DVD2SVCD and swear by its flexibility and ease of use.
