That is some scarry stuff. And it is a prime example of how we are hurting ourselves with piracy. Through those actions and the over reaction and mistaken association of big business we the legal users are to be stripped of our rights to stop those who abuse those rights. And in the end it "will" be innefectual. Countries like China and such will have "vanilla" DTA converters who will ignore the watermark. Even if the media has to be damaged to remove this so called watermark it will be done. In the end they have stopped those evil innocent people from dooing their legal business while the pirates keep on trucking. It is impossible for them to control all hardware everywhere. Who's to say i don't build some stone age monstrosity from scratch that will circumvent their precious protection? One thing is for sure. I want a piece of the companies who do not go in for such crap. As they rake in the millions I will be a ritch man.

The government is not forcing them. They are forcing the government. If it were not for the recent boom in piracy over the net our position would be alot better. But the few who actively pirate in this instance really are ruining it for those of us who dont. They have always wanted to do this. But the piracy over the internet has given them the amunition to trample our rights.

Seriously guys, the cop-chips they are proposing will never pass legislation. You can tell that the one who dreamed up that technology was a jurist and not an engineer. The logistics/economical/compatible requirements for that to be a feasible solution are staggering.

I agree. But who is to say that something similar might not make it's way to us? Some of it is a bit fantastic and out of reach of todays technology. But not all of it. The person who proposed it knew it was a bit fantastic as well for todays technology. But tomorrow who's to say. The thing is because of trading of movies/music/software on the internet(especially) and elsewhere by a few it is being used as a banner and a tool to trample the rights of the majority. It is my right to back up the media I own. But they are gonna take away that right as best they can because a few abuse it. People kill people with guns/kinves/sticks. But the majority of people do not. So we still have our guns/knives/sticks(They will have to pry my stick from my cold dead hands! It is ooooh soh pointy!). I am writing my congress(person) to tell them to tell these loosers to come up with a plan that will actually stop piracy. Like tracing IP's and bustin' down doors.

A few months back the MPAA sent a list of IPs to T-Online (Germany's largest ISP) indicating that pirated material was being traded.. the accountholders then got a warning letter saying that if it continues the account would be disabled by breach of contract. And it's hardly the first case that this has happened. And sending a cop after everybody who downloads an MP3 would be blowing things way out of proportions.
