View Full Version : poor quality svcds at 5 pass rate, why??

my sytem is amd athlon 1400, 256 ddr ram, xp os , 40 gb hd, of which 15gb is free at start of rip.

The movie i ripped is mean machine(pal) , now not all of the film quality is bad, it seems certain sections are very dark, very blocky , very blurry in parts., it seems a fuzziness appears on certain action scenes, had a problem before, where the svcds seemed to be to dark , so i was told to increas luminace, it seems to have improved, but certain scenes are still very poor.

As i say, do all films at 5 pass, so not really sure what is going on, do not use the pc at all, when rip is in process, and a 90 minute film usually takes about 14 hours.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks, the relevant information is below. cheers

if your Standalone DVD player can handle it and u don't mind th SVCD not being compliant to the standards, u can try to increase the max bitrate. I had the same problem too, the movie ended looking very poor in high action scenes (it's an anime) and had a lot of blocks in those scens, which dissappeared when increasing the max bitrate to 3000-3500 range. of course, your standalone has to be able to handle them. U could try a short clip with those new settings and see if it has any effect. An try bicubic resize method, maybe that is a reason for it too (don't know for sure, though).

It may help to know also the name of the movie, also why are doing a 5 pass VBR? you may get the same results with a 4 pass and save from 3 to 5 hours encoding time, I did some testing on 5 pass vs 4 pass and I didn't notice any difference.
But I may be wrong, this is just a suggestion. But is you are a "quality freak" then go for it. :sly:

I always do 5 pass vbr as i can tell the difference between 4 and 5, and i'm in to quality and i dont mind the extra time since both my machines are fast:). Here are a few settings that might help you.

As you can tell i use BicubicResize as it produces the best quality in my opinion. maybe try that and also you can play around with the settings as you can see my c value is set to .60 you can do 50 if you think its still 2 blocky, but i doubt you will find it blocky.
