View Full Version : Help - DVD2SVCD not filling CDR to capacity

JFerguson
11th July 2002, 00:56
Hey all. I'm having trouble getting DVD2SVCD to generate an image that fills an 80-minute CDR. I'm ripping/converting the first half of the Recess School's Out movie (animated feature) at 42:11 minutes:seconds and I keep getting an image that's around 620MB.

I used the bitrate calculator at vcdhelp.com and got a figure of 2375 for average bitrate and popped that into the max average setting but it didn't seem to make any difference.

Does anyone have any ideas on this? I have had this problem with other rips of animated films.

Here's the log from my last try:

In the bitrate tabe change the min to 1-40. then change the cd size to whatever size you want it to be. You should be all set. :)

Ok, on the Bitrate tab, I have:

Between 0 and 40 mins use 1 CD size 800 (? - 2525)
Between 40 and 76 mins use 1 CD size 800 (2525 - 1230)
...
Max 2530 Min 300 <unchecked> Min avg 1600 Max avg 2230

Once again, I got another image that was approximately 620MB in size... :(

When u use VBR to encode a movie u can only be sure that the size won't exceed the size specified in the bitrate tab. A big part of a VBR encode is to make max. use of the bits available and only use the minimum amount of space. If u really want a specific image size ur better of doing a CBR encode.

If u want a 800MB image of a movie lasting 42.11 u should check "min avg. bitrate" in the bitrate tab.

Enter 2352 in both "min. avg." and max. avg." if u have selected a audio streem of 128Kbit.
Enter 2320 in both "min. avg." and max. avg." if u have selected a audio streem of 160Kbit.
Enter 2288 in both "min. avg." and max. avg." if u have selected a audio streem of 192Kbit.
Enter 2256 in both "min. avg." and max. avg." if u have selected a audio streem of 224Kbit.

Here's the calulation (not 100% accurate but good enough):

800MB cd = 800x1.000 = 800000 kb
43 minute movie = 43x60 = 2580 seconds

Do a little diversion: 800.000/2580 = 310.07 kb/sec
Do a little conversion 310.07x8 = 2480

Now the 2480 is the max. combined video&audio bitrate u can use if u wanna fill a cd of 800MB. Just subtract the audio kbit rate and u have the CBR u need to fill the CD completely.

Hope it makes sense but feel free to ask.

An encode at CBR 2500 has the same filesize size as an 3PassVBR encode of the same movie with an average of 2500, not bigger and not smaller. (at least no big difference, maybe some KB, but far less than 1MB)
You are right to use CBR with this high bitrate, it safes a lot of time and you won't notice any difference in quality.

But why do both of you use a bitrate calculator? DVD2SVCD will do this for you. With a movie of 42.11 I would do an CBR-encode with min 300 and max 2600, no matter what audio-rate, and DVD2SVCD will calculate the correct bitrate for the video better than you can do with any calculator-prg.

Labersack, What shall we put in "Max Avg" and "Min Avg" fields?

I was using the bitrate calculator because I thought that the limits (2530 / 300) were somehow affecting my image size. I know that DVD2SVCD takes care of this, but for some reason I cannot get it past generating this 620MB image. This has happened with another rip (Goofy Movie) that I never finished, and I wonder if their animated property has anything to do with these problems.

I have done 40+ minute movie conversions otherwise that have come out just fine, filling an 80-minute CDR within 30 seconds.

I will try a CBR encode, but I hope we can figure out what is going on here.

Ok, I did a CBR at 2600 / 300, nothing else checked, and got a 665MB image.

This is closer to 700MB, but this isn't the expected result is it?

max average is set at 2230? change this to 2450 if you want to fill a cdr with 42 minutes. keep min at 300, max at 2600.
with this high a bitrate cbr is good, no need to use 4-pass vbr.

da franksta is right, set maxavg also higher. I set both max to 2600 (sorry for not say this clearly), min to 300 and uncheck minavg. So DVD2SVCD can calculate the correct bitrate.

Ok, I used the default settings, then made these overrides:

On the first line (Between 0 and 50...):
. overrode CD Size to 800

On the last line:
. set Max. to 2600 (Min. left alone at 300)
. set Max. to 2450 (Min. avg left alone and unchecked)

And, I got a 699.84MB image! Thanx!

So, I'm guessing that I had to tweak these settings since DVD2SVCD was otherwise bounded by some of the characteristics of this rip.

Can you guys offer some simple guidelines on when I need to do this and how to calculate out the override values?

You should set max to 'limit of your Player-audiorate'. If you want to stay in the specs, set max to '2756-audiorate'. I always set maxavg to the same value, but you want to be on the safe side (Some have CCE-problems with this settings) set maxavg to '2756-audio-120'. Set min to 300, uncheck minavg.
You can leave this settings for all your conversions.

Am I right in seeing half the time in a CBR VS a 4pass VBR?

Thx,

You are right to use CBR with this high bitrate, it safes a lot of time and you won't notice any difference in quality.

But why do both of you use a bitrate calculator? DVD2SVCD will do this for you. With a movie of 42.11 I would do an CBR-encode with min 300 and max 2600, no matter what audio-rate, and DVD2SVCD will calculate the correct bitrate for the video better than you can do with any calculator-prg.
