well already we have seen some interesting discussion on this site and others about consumer fair use "rights" , microsoft and content provider's efforts to remove aforementioned rights.

is very interesting reading if ur concerned about these issues or indeed enthusiast computing in general. the author argues that palladium is just another measure to ensure that dvd ( and future formats ) are not able to be copied using consumer level computers.

a warning that the article is fairly long ( 3107 words + any related links that you follow ) and is written from a technical point of view , though it is very well written imo so it is easy to read. also note that the site that the article resides on contains purely user-driven content if ur worried about how "kosher" this guy is ... though quite frankly what is a "reputable" source these days, anyway ? Make of it what you will.

i'd be interested in hearing any comments. i will just say i find it pretty appalling. Before u know it the pc is just going to be a supercharged dvd player and the only thing u will purchase when u purchase content is a license to view it. i won't say any more because it's pretty much all been said before ... im disgusted once again - yet i feel pretty powerless to prevent these things happening. is anyone else getting annoyed by this rampant disregard for our freedoms ( and by that i really mean everyone's freedom ) ? :(

Interesting article. Although I believe the author believes that Sony and the content providers have backed Microsoft into the corner, don't think for one second that Microsoft is upset. It sounds like a spin to me, actually, since Microsoft will benefit greatly by controlling what software runs on Palladium machines.

agreed - it will mean microsoft has an active hand in "managing" the use of the pc. what scares me is not that it's m$ - it's the fact that its anybody there to provide that level of "management".

i hear about those weird plans a lot, lately.

i think, the dvd-issue is still the smalles problem we might face one day. as i understand, ms os will one day depend on hardware that ensures all these freaky security-models on a hardware-level. that would mean, we'll face hardware in our stores, that would force people to run windows on it?!? what about linux, if it really goes that far?

so i wonder, what will happen with the customers.. i myself would simply refuse to buy such crap.
there /are/ always alternatives, atm it's linux wich might simply finally get a boost in user-friendlyness and become useable for the average user. then there are macs (xpensive!) but i hear of no similar plans from that side, yet.

maybe ms manages to kick themself out of the market one day. i would lol for a week ;)
