win xp freezes

hi folks,
got a problem,
im running xp,without any problems so far but after intstalling some programms(tv applications....,video editing programms) xp sometimes freezes for 1-2 seconds ...don`t know why...
i`ve cleaned the registry and tried norton`s utilieties too,bur still
the same...any body knows how i can fix it??

or have i to reinstall?:devil:
or maybe install over the ol installation?

XP does quite a lot on its own initiative(!), so this could be part of the problem. In particular it does some rearranging of the files on the system disk to bring those needed during boot together to speed up the boot process (a key goal with XP was to boot much quicker than 2K). I thought that this went on when the system was otherwise idle, but who knows how idleness is measured? I have often seen advice from XP gurus that you should occasionally leave your system on for a few hours to play with itself and do secret housekeeping.

Did you do a clean install on a blank disk, or an upgrade? The strong advice is to do the former, since that latter puts some restrictions on what XP can do with the file and directory structure, and can lead to a second-best result.

Beyond that, all I can suggest is that there is an intermittent hardware problem that sometimes occupies the cpu - e.g. servicing a flood of interrupts. There is also a problem with Nvidia video drivers going into an infinite loop, but I have not heard of a system correcting itself from that - a reboot is usually necessary.

Also i'd like to note that windows xp will find harware problems, alot faster then any other operating system does. What i mean by that is if ram is flaking out a bit windows xp will act up, even if your other operating system didn't. Also always install xp as a clean install as phamilton stated you'll prolly only have problems with it if you install over another operating system.
