Ifoedit & xbox?

Has anyone been able to figure out why ifoedit'ed rips do not work on an xbox? I've been trying to figure out whether the problem lays with my burning software or ifoedit....

One good way to eliminate IfoEdit is to rip and burn a DVD-5 movie. There are plenty of them (I just did Dogma)

Welp I shoulda been more detailed in my inital post. DVD-5 rips do work ok in the xbox - written by nero or primodvd.

I've been having a problem with primodvd crashing when writing Ifoedit rips, so I burn them with nero.

When I do so, xboxs cant read them....so is it ifoedit or nero?

Do these work on the PC or a standalone? If not, you're probably missing a step in the IfoEdit process.
If they do, then I guess Xbox is going to be a problem.

It is Nero. Lemme guess... You're getting a "Dirty Disc" message? PS2 will give a "Insert a real Playstation 2 disc".

I don't get that with any other burning software except Nero. Nero is great for CDRs, but it's a shitty DVD program. In all fairness, I sitll haven't burnt a disc with 5.9.9.0 but that is because I don't want a coaster with my new $5.99 Verbatims.

Maybe I'll try one with these last few cdrecordables.com discs I have.

Why not give Nero a try (5.5.9.0) ??

Up until last week, I was not able to burn with Nero (5.5.8.2) it cost me a few coasters, but since upgarding to 5.5.9.0 last weekend, No problems. and that includes my standalone (I don't count a burn a success unless it burns on my Pioneer 444)

Burnt VOB files, image files, even disc to disc on the fly (previuosly ripped movie + DVD ROM drive) all burnt with no problems (using Datasafe 3rd generation discs) £1.59 a piece.

Why not try a DVD-RW (Princo ver 1.1) Iv'e found that to be Ok as well.

Did you try on a console (ps2 or xbox)? The discs burnt with Nero would always play in my standalone, but never in my consoles. It seems like Nero adds something that makes them think it's a pirated disc (how silly is that?!?).

When I burn a DVD, I usually make an image copy first (Imgtool), then burn.

What version of PS2 do you own (I have version 5), also what media doo you use, I have just changed to Datasafe (3rd generation).

I have found that Ulead Movie factory is also a good burner, very easy for Image burning, the only problem is, it will only accept a file extension of *.iso so, you have to change the Imgtool file (*.img) manually.

OK, this IS a problem. I've witnessed this before, and I mentioned it in another post, but no one really seemed to care at the time so I didn't make a big deal about it :)

I have a stack of about 50 IFOedit rips. They all play on most every standalone that I put them in. They play on my PS2, except at the end where they start to skip and pixelate (cheap media). However, NONE will play on my Xbox. OK, so I've only tried about 15 of them, but I wouldn't expect any of the others to work if I were to try all 50.

They all give the message 'this is not an Xbox disc' or something along those lines. And it's not the media because Xbox games burned on the same media will work fine. Just FYI, I use Gear Pro DVD 6.01, and it's never given me any problems.

So there IS something with the IFOEdit rips that the Xbox can see and dosen't like. Most standalones and the PS2 choose to ignore whatever this is, but it would be nice if we could figure it out!

BTW, is there *anyone* who has succeeded in playing an IFOEdit ripped movie on their Xbox? I doubt it, but if so, please give us all the details you can think of. IE, movie name, how you ripped it, media, buring software, Xbox version, is it chipped, etc.

You raise some very intersting points.

Have I assumed correctly, you are always using the same "cheap" media ??

A conclusion might be,it can't be that "cheap" because the Play Station reads it OK. What media are you using (name names).

Another conclusion might be, there's nothing wrong with your discs, it's you Xbox.

Does it play "normal" DVD's ??

Having ripped so many movies, have you tried another media type, and done a "disc to disc" copy (of ripped movie) ?

My son has an Xbox, I have given him a disc to try (Spy Game) he said it worked OK.

I have not seen this for myself, I'll quiz him further.

Do you know how to tell waht version it is ?? I didn't know there was more than 1. He must have a very early version, because he bought it on opening day (more money than sense).

I have. EVERY DVD-R I have is an IfoEdit rip (about 45). I'm telling you, it is not the media, it's the program you're burning with. Prassi DVD and Vob Instant CD/DVD ALWAYS makes my dvd-rs readable in my xbox and ps2; however, if burn using Nero, they NEVER work on my xbox and I get the "Dirty Disc/Not an Xbox Disc message. Reburn the original files using Prassi or Vob and you'll have discs that play fine in your xbox. Trust me, it is NOT an IfoEdit problem.

I tend to agree. Media of course matters. But your burning software can also make/break your discs. I think Nero 5.5.8.x has serious problems with the way it lays out the VOB/IFO/BUP files on the DVD. The only player that likes my Nero burns is the Apex, which is very forgiving.

I can't get Prassi/RecordNow to accept IFO/VOB files (it says there is something wrong with them, but doesn't say what) but I can burn images created within IfoEdit. IfoEdit uses ImgLib, which is derived from DVD Wise. I'd say DVD Wise knows how to lay out a DVD and Nero doesn't (at this point).

BTW, with both Nero and Prassi/RecordNow I am using IfoEdit to strip streams/vobs, edit commands, and so forth. I think IfoEdit works fine and seems to know how to structure an IFO file. It's Nero that seems to be the problem.

So it seems to be a consensus... Nero has issues formatting dvds and Prassi Primodvd cant fixup an ifoedit'ed rip (mine crashes consistently).

My xbox does seem to take any type of media I throw at it so I dont think media is an issue with the xbox.

Yes, it can; However, it will not burn if you take title sets or remove files from title sets:

ie:
keeping
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB

<--Prassi won't burn since VTS_02_(etc) is not there
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB

but...
Vob Instant CD/DVD will burn discs with incomplete titles sets and they should work fine in your player. They work in my ps2, xbox, and standalone.

I just finished few tests. The produced dvd-r worked on every imaginable player I was able to lay my hands on:

ps/2, xbox, toshiba sd2200, toshiba sd1200

the test was just one vob, complete ifoedit recreate of all ifo files, then make image with imgtool and then burn with ulead movie factory.

The results were perfect. burner is a04, media is memorex upc code 3470705510 parth #32025510

So the main patterns that you will notice here are:

-Gear Pro movies DO NOT play on the Xbox, but the Sony standalone and PS2 have no problem with them.

-Movies recorded on the generic media WILL NOT play on the PS2.

-The Xbox seems to be very picky about how the disc was recorded.

So there you have it. Don't use Gear Pro DVD 6.01. The old standby, PrimoDVD 2.0 comes through again. Oh yeah, I did try to record a disc with InstantCD/DVD...the bastard wrote the lead in and the just stopped...ruining a 5 dollar verbatim disc :angry: I think I could hear it laughing while I was kicking the computer. Anyone seen this problem with VOBInstant before?

i have had 100% success with generic dvd-r from allmediaoutlet, pink surface, $1.20 each - i got their cake box 10 dvd-r for $12. all my disks played on the xbox as well as ps2

hey all. I'm using optodisk media I bought from supermediastore. I payed $1.55 / disk with case. I've done around 40 movies using ifoedit and record now. All disks have performed flawlessly with both my settop jvc player and x-box. fyi

In Response to earlier questions on Nero. I had ver 5.5.8.0 and burnt disks that i had ifo'd. Got the message "Please insert Playstation disk" I have downloaded 5.5.9.9 this morning. The option "DVD VIDEO" that was greyed out on previous versions is now available. Just copy the Files that ifoedit creates into the VIDEO_TS folder and no problems playing on PS2.

Again the question of media. I have a 100 spindle of unbranded silver media and this works on the ps2. Only problem i have found is that the last chapter and credits at end are a bit jerky. Think this must be because the size was 4.12 gb and is nearing the edge of the dvd surface.

The XBOX will not play DVD video's burned using nero's DVD-Video project. If however I create an image of the exact same files using ifoedit v0.91 and then burn this with DVD-Decrypter v3.1.2.0 the XBOX will play them.

Burning using nero (v 5.5.8.0 or 5.5.9.9) results in a disk that plays on nearly all set top box DVD players but not the XBOX?

Anyone have any ideas why, LBA errors, files incorrectly located e.g. .BUP's, or incorrect micro-UDF filesystem implementation?

Just to add something:

I have written DVD's using Nero and they work on my Samsung but not on my Wharfdale or XBox.

I am using DVD+R media.

I wrote some home movies onto the same brand DVD's using Pinnacle Express and they worked on all three machines.

What is the latest favorite for burning?

I tried to copy a game the same way and could not get it to work on a bare bone XBOX; it thinks that the burned disk is a DVD and asks me to hook up the DVD option (which I don't have). Could you give a more detailed procedures on how you did it? Did you use Decripter to rip the game to the hard disk first (IFO or ISO)?

In order to play copied games on XBOX, you need to have it chipped. But no offense, here is not the place to talk about copying games, let's not give doom9 any problems.

Here's my two cents worth. I used the "Author DVD" function and then made an image with Ifoedit. Used Prassi to burn it to Optodisc from Meritline and it played on my Xbox. But tried the same thing with Meritlines cheapest media and it did not work. Didn't get the "invalid disc" message, just a blank black screen.

I think everyone already has seen the reults of NERO, I thought I would also agree that Nero 5.5.8 or .9 does not work with the xbox. I can get my DVDs to work with most standalones but not Xbox or PS2.

I use either Spruce UP or DVDit to author a disc set and then Nero to burn the files and get the error with the xbox. My xbox plays stamped dvds fine and I know this media I am using, Princo DVD-Rs, work just fine in the xbox, just not Nero burned DVDs. I obviously need to find another program and will post when I have found a solution.

you could also use RecordNow Max, I've been using it for quite awhile and it works fine on the XBOX.... by the way, if you have an xbox, you gotta buy Splinter Cell (it's the best game i've ever played)

I just run a cross-over cable from Xbox to my pc...make the network connection....use flashFXP.....highlight the files and transfer them to HD..then burn with record now...burned 46 so far and no coasters yet!

The problem is NOT Ifoedit. The problem is with Nero.

You can do several things to fix this: do as everyone is saying and create an image first (I actually use an older version of Imgtools that doesn't create a Nero image; it creates an ISO-compliant image). Then burn using DVD Decrypter. Or you can use a program like RecordNow Max to burn the disc without using an image, just using the data files (if you don't have enough space on your drive).

gnutellafan, give us the version that you believe to work with xbox and will do a test. so far my own personal tests have indicated that nero is out for xbox compatibility but things do evolve and i will be happy to see nero work one day. it sure is a hassle to have to make image file first. i would like to see me just draggin&droppin stuff.

I had the same problems with old versions of Nero.

With the latest version downloadable off of Ahead's website (5.5.10.something I think? I'm booted into Linux so I can't check ATM.), IfoEdit rips work on my Rowa DVD-3610. Previously some of them would partially crash the player (After inserting some discs, the player wouldn't play any other discs until after powercycling.)

I've also had good results with mkisofs under Linux.
