I just wanted to ask all you skilled divX encoders a question on what OS you prefer to encode your divX files. Specifically in reference to Windows 98 or Windows XP, and what OS is more efficiant at encoding divX files?
I personally think it's Windows XP, as I've just recently changed OS to WinXP and really find it more smoother, faster and stable. My reason for this question is someone in alt.video.divx is saying that Windows 98 is more efficiant to encode and playback divX files and I totally disagree with them.
Lastly, During playback on a divX file encoded with the divX 5.02 pro codec, including the all the pro filters, will that take more system resources to playback because of the filters, in comparison to a divX file that was encoded with divX 5.02, but with NO pro filters?
Thanks all!

I'm personally using Win2k, and am more than happy with it. Win98 is in my experience very unstable, it crashes/locks up far too easily. Both Win2k and XP are a major improvement on that, however I don't believe there is any speed advantage for either of them compared to Win98. At least not a noticable improvement as far as encoding is concerned.
Add to that the fact that some developers don't even include Win98 compatibility in their newest programs anymore (at least on the ripping scene) and upgrading is highly recommended.
Lastly, During playback on a divX file encoded with the divX 5.02 pro codec, including the all the pro filters, will that take more system resources to playback because of the filters, in comparison to a divX file that was encoded with divX 5.02, but with NO pro filters?Yes, there is a huge difference between using the Pro features and not using them. Especially B-frames and Q-Pel increase CPU load drastically, to the point of dropped frames/async audio in lower to mid end computers.
Setting post processing off certainly helps in those cases though.

I'm still using Win98 and no problems at all. Encoding & playing all fine, no stability problems, no ressources problems.

Well since I've tried both operating systems I do prefer the windows xp. I use to ocassionally get blue screen errors on win98 and since i've switched to winXP it has been flawless so far with excellent playback technology.
But if win98 works for you as the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't try to fix it.
Also as a side note, my encoding process is faster with winXP and for some reason it rips the vob files from the dvd a little faster than it did using win98.

I'm using Win2k and I like it (memory doesn't fill up that much in win2k - if you close programs, they will free their memory again!)
However, Win98SE is very usable for encoding, editing and watching video. I didn't notice any difference in speed when I changed the OS to Win2k.
