WooT!
After messing around with ReMpeg and IfoEdit trying to reencode Vanilla Sky I finally batched what I was doing and decided just to reauthor the title all together.
I've gotten so much help from many of your guys and gals here I feel responsible to give back and hopefully help someone else who might be having problems.
Tools Used:
DVDDecrypter 3.1.1
IfoEdit .91
DVD2AVI
CCE SP 2.50
VFAPI Converter 1.04
Chapter Xtractor v0.961
Sonic ReelDVD
- I first stripped the movie vob only with DVDDecrypter.
- Using IfoEdit I stripped everything but the DD5.1 and the 16:9 Video
- Used DVD2AVI 1.76 to strip out the ac3 track to a separate file and create a project to use with VFAPI
- Created a fake avi with VFAPI Converter so CCE can work it's magic
- Followed the "Getting the most out of CCE" http://doom9.org/mpg/cce-advanced.htm guide to reencode.
- Used Pulldown to convert the file from 23.97 -> 29.97 fps
- Checked chapter points on the original VOB files with Chapter Xtractor.
- Loaded the resulting m2v and the ac3 file into sonic ReelDVD and created the chapter points roughly by using the timecode listings from Chapter Xtractor.
- Created the VOB files in ReelDVD and burned.
Perfect copy! Looks fantastic even though I used VBR at 3400 Mbs. I was able to convert a 5.4 GIG Movie down to 3.8 with very little degradation in quality. CCE Rocks kids!! I'm going to reencode at a slightly higher bitrate to max out the full dvd and quality.
Thanks for everything guys...

Nice one!
Don't forget that you can use Chapter extractor to find the chapter time-points, and input these into Cinemacraft prior to encoding, rather than having to "author" them back in within ReelDVD. This may save you a little time, and give you a more accurate chapter placement:

Thanks for your post.

I did that with CCE but when I went reassembled in REEL DVD and did the simulation run the chapter points were not there. I don't know if this is an issue with REEL DVD just not acknowledging that there were chapter points in the video file already or not.
No big deal. It only took 5 minutes to add them back during the authoring.
Thanks again.

i want to say that the Doom9 crew is a bunch of some of the nicest guys out there...helping n00bs like me and others become better program users and dvd authorors. i would also like to thank doom9 for keeping his site quite good as well as making the guides very understandable and having people in his channel who actually care and devote some time to helping others with their problems. It has been very nice learning from everyone as i will continue to learn and help others with there problems if i can. you can learn something new everyday just by posting and listening. again, fellas keep up the good work, it is greatly appreciated by many even if they dont want to admit it.. good luck to everyone and have fun! ;)

Good work on the re-author! I've been working at it myself for a while as well.
I noticed that you're using ReelDVD, and I had a question. Everytime I try to import an AC3 track into ReelDVD (2.5.1), it rejects it saying that it's not a supported format. I've tried several different AC3 files, most of the created by DVD2AVI 1.77.3, and no dice.
Any ideas why?

Really...
I've never had a problem importing it. When you rip it using DVD2AVI what are the settings you are using?

orionware : may be you could speed up the process frameserving it with avisynth.
besides that : nice "resumé" ! (i'm french, so i have to brag with french words sometimes ! ;) )
arky : i have a hard time to see how the chapter points you enter in cee are used afterwards in the reauthoring process?
is it true for one pass vbr or only multi pass vbr?
when i enter these chapters points in cce i still have to enter them in my authoring tool.
i first thouht it had something to do with spruceup but it looks like most (all?) authoring softwares wont care much wheter you did it in CCE or not.
besides , i dont know much about m2v file structure, but can it contain informations like chapter points?

Aren't the chapter points @CCE only used to start a GOP at the defined positions ?
I wonder if a raw elementary videostream is able to hold "chapter-points".
As far as I can see, the chapter points could be found inside the *.ifo file.
If there might be chapter information inside the videofile itself, it must be some kind of multiplexed stream (programstream) with "user data" fields.
I doubt that an *.m2v/*.mpv (as provided by CCE) could hold the chapter information.

@orionware
When you re-authored Vanilla Sky, did you include the main menu also (or any menus)? Or did you just do a 'main movie only' re-author?

Orionware,
Weird, I haven't had that problem again since! Weird. I have been able to bring ac3 files in since then.
MFM, I guess.....

jeff_jordan is right (according me at least !)
"CCE chapters" enable to have a GOP starting at the begining of the chapter. If you do not do that, you can just go to a P frame when jumping to a chapter wich causes at least some scrambled image until it get a new full I frame, or simply crash the player.
"Authoring chapter" defines where are the chapters
So, both needed.

Hello everyone,
After hours of ripping, stripping, and encoding, I have found that I don't have a authoring software to put things together. I have looked around everywhere but i couldn't find any downloadable, they don't have trial version any more...

Perhaps you need a refresher course on the forum rules....

I just did the same thing here..Just the Main Movie..
Used Lord of the Rings...
But I used ReMPEG2 and took it down to 60%...encoding took about 12 hours..But it was awesome when it was done...fit all onto 1 DVDR and it plays and looks superb.
Everyone keeps touting CCE over ReMPEG2 ...but I have to say that ReMPEG2 was much easier to use and the steps were fewer and less complicated....
I also did CCE encode today...Maestro is also so much easier to use than Scenarist.
Will try my next encode/reauthor with CCE and compare the time plus the quality of encoding..on the same movie...The Patriot should be a challenge to fit onto one DVDR..
Newbie to DVD Authoring here..But I know enough to get myself into trouble..
:>))

Try CCE. It just simply rocks. It is more complex than ReMpeg but just follow the guides and I think after the first one you'll see it's worth it.

I do use CCE 2.5 extensively for making SVCDs for myself and buds...
I will tweak it some more under DVDR making and c what I get..
Thx,

I followed Orionware's steps, but when I made the DVD the audi didn't match (exp: the voices didn't match the mouths). I followed evething step by step. Although I skpied step 4 in the "Getting the most out of CCE" but that shouldn't matter.
What am I doing wrong?

Hey Doc
Was it off by a lot or just to the point where it was noticable?
You might want to try AC Delay Corrector (http://doom9.org/Soft21/Audio/ac3delay_all.zip) . I have starting using that for all re-authors now to ensure proper sync up.
If it was WAY off, you might have not stripped everything out BUT the movie and the audio.

Hay orionware!
LOL!! I was about 2s off, worse than a Foreign movie :p
I will try the Delay Corrector. Also I was going over my steps and I don’t think I striped the original VOB files. I think I used DVD2AVI right from the originals. Does that matter?
Thanks for the help!

AC Delay corrector will fix you up then. That should solve the sync problem.
I've found that it always a good idea to make sure that the VOB you want contains only one audio and one video track so I let IfoEdit strip that before I apply the DVD2AVI voodoo on it.

You can just set a different start time for AC3 in scenarist and maestro.
Just drag/move/drop the ac3 stream in the track.
You can also use numerical value to set precise value.
By the way, you can get real delay value from DVDdecrypter... Just look at text files
