View Full Version : SpruceUP - this one's BIZARRE!!!! :(

I have used SpruceUP for quite some time now, alongside Maestro, purely as a means of "almost-instantaneously" checking out playback of my streams using VOB filters (these scale the encoded results far more smoothly than MediaPlayer just playing back the raw MPEG streams (MediaPlayer scales so poorly that it is easy to mistake poorly scaled footage for footage having macro-block distortions, akin to those you would expect from a lack of bitrate)). Anyway, imagine my surprise when, having finally configured the RAID array on my new desktop, and installed Win2k cleanly, I found that every time I attempted to run SpruceUP, it rebooted my entire system - POW! - no warning, no messages, just like I hit the reset button!!

I reinstalled it 3 times, even restored the image I had taken of the clean Win2k install (using Powerquest Drive Image), prior to installation of Appz, but STILL it reset my system every single time. I then unplugged my two RAID drives, and restored my Win2k image again, rebooted with the clean setup (minus the presence of the RAID drives), and reinstalled SpruceUP. Guess what - it ran perfectly with no resetting. SO then I shut down the system, re-plugged the two RAID drives into the RAID sockets on the MoBo, and rebooted. Everything ran smoothly. Once I got into Windows, I clicked on SpruceUP - SPLATT! - the system reset itself again - conclusion - it is apparently impossible to run SpruceUP on a system with RAID!!!!!

Quite why this should be, is a total mystery to me, but I'm damn-well not gonna ditch my RAID drives - SpruceUP is going out of the window instead.

Anyone care to enlighten me on this issue? NO OTHER APPLICATION has this issue, not even Maestro...

I've had Vstrip and smartripper perform this service on my computer under w2k as well. I suspect it had something to do with cd-drivers/aspi-layer/regionchecking ... take your pick. SpruceUp might be trying to initialize some of the same given that it can also burn your images, just a thought. Never resolved it. I'm on xp now (and glad of it)

Did you try right click the program and trying a different compatibility? I am running a raid controller and never experienced that problem .... thank goodness.... I am having my own problem that no matter what i do i cannot get the demo for ProCoder to work:angry: I only get as far as the splash screen!

Very good point. you should definately try apcompat.exe and run it through there.

cheers

Hi.
I had the same problem over here. After searching on some Spruce-Forums (which exist till the present day!) i found the solution. The solution is as starnge as the problem but it works.
I guess your RAID comes from Highpoint, doesn't it?

Install a product from PADUS, I for example installed DiscJuggler and everything will work.

YES - you guessed correctly, Cayne - my onboard RAID controller is indeed Highpoint! I have a demo of DiskJuggler languishing on an old CDR somewhere, but I am reluctant to press it into service because I may cause more problems than I solve. I say this because I use Nero, and I don't wish to add more ASPI-conflict issues than I need have. Nero uses it's own ASPI layer, but is nevertheless known to conflict with, for example, Adaptec Esay CD Creator (now 'Roxio'). I will mull the relative risks-vs.-benefits over, before proceeding.

Thanks for the heads-up, though - that is an intriguing workaround to a bizarre problem. I was beginning to suspect that it was a memory-allocation error, or similar, but it would seem not, if Padus installations rectify the problem.

Regarding ApCompat, I cannot see why this should be necessary, since SpruceUp works 100% fine on my system, just so long as my RAID drives are not plugged in, although older builds of Maestro (pre-2914) required ApCompat for stable running.

Thankyou one and all for your (as ever) useful contributions :) , I will repost with my findings, #IF# I decide to pursue SpruceUP on my system any further!

Arky,

I have had Discjuggler and Nero on my machine for the last 3 years. They both have undergone many revisions and 3 different O/S's and they have never caused any conflict with each other.

I have a Abit kta-raid with a 480 gb raid array...and i was having the same problem with Spruce up

after tracking the problem down it was an ASPI driver issue.
what i did was uninstall Spruce and then reinstall latest aspi version from adaptec then reinstall spruce and every thing went back to normal

Thanks - I'll try the Adaptec ASPI first, then.
