Play clips from CD or HD?

personally, i prefere copying the file to the HD, since i don't like the fact that my CD drives plays constantly for 1.5-2.5 hours. i don't like all this on-off that goes on inside the cd drive. it must shorten the life of the cd drive imo. on top of that, playing clips right from the cd might affect the 'fluidity' of the playback. and it only takes 3-5 mins to copy the file to the HD.

what do u prefere? do u use some kind of extended caching mechanism? if u do, what is it, and how good it is in your oppinion?

this is NOT xcd specific. i'm talking general playback of burned clips (of course, xcd springs into mind as well... but that's not the focus here).

Hehe, I do it the same way :)

But I have to _add_ another reason:

it seems to me that the playback from HD is more "reliable" - just think of a sector that's unreadable on a cd. It happened to me sometimes when I tried it, and it disturbs the "viewing pleasure".
And, the playback from HD is less CPU intensive (but that shouldn't be a problem either since DMA/UDMA, but I still encounter differences there).

I watch my clips directly from CD. I use CDRomTool to slow down my drive to 16x = allmost silent, doesen't strain the drive so much and playback is still perfectly smooth and fluid.

Same here ... CD-ROM is throttled to 4x - runs cool and quiet, and no spindowns etc.

as I am the first one who voted (!) for "view movies from my CD" and it is said details please... here they come: additional cache 1238KB. Playback is perfect and my drive very silent.

I'm still using win98se and it works just fine for me. that's why I can't help you to find a way to set the cd-rom cache size in win2000/xp.

i wonder.. i mean, a cd-player lives for ages.. ok, it doesn't go up and down with it's reading speed, but cdroms are designed to do that.

the other day, my pioneer 10x-dvdrom finally refused to read, whatever i fed it with (had gotten worse and worse), so i opened it up, blew any possible dust from the lens, and: unbelievable! - it works like new! sad thing is, that i had went and bought a new aopen in the meantime, but surely somebody will be very happy about my old drive.

Most of the time i play from the cd...as im lazy...i never have any problems, unless the cd is scratched...and then it wouldnt copy anyway. My CD burner (i dont use it to watch movies..i use my dvd drive for that) died about a month ago, i was never sure why though. I had made over 500 cds on it (in about 1.3 years)...but i wouldnt think that would stuff it up. I probably should open it up and clean it...but then i might realise that i wasted $300 on a new burner...so its probably best left in my cupboard.

Mine never go on CD at all. Now that DVD-R burners and large hard drives are cheap, I've also stopped using 700MB as a cut point.
Now, I pick a size for my rips that gives good quality. Nothing else matters.
If a friend gets it from me and wants to put it on CD, they can handle the splitting on their own.

In my experience, that's not enough for fluid Divx playback. Are you talking about VCDs?

I copy Divx to HD because then I'm sure it plays very fluid from beginning to the end, plus, when it's a 2CD rip, I can make a playlist and almost don't notice the file-change in the middle of the movie. :)

this player is really smart.

A Player, which permits the access to several CD Rome drive assemblies, in which the individual parts of a film are and which are "hochgetourt" (I don't know in english, something like turned up but...as I said I don't know) briefly before its actual start (e.g. movie2.avi, movie3.avi). The Player makes likewise a cross fade both of the filming hurry, in order to make a complete benefit possible of the film. An autorun function is already implemented.

I voted for "right off the CD". If it hurts the drive it either happens after the (in germany mandatory) warranty of two years which is a good reason to get a newer drive anyway ;) or it dies before the two year period and warranty kicks in *grin*.

its even enough for 2cd divx if you use bsplayer or if you have a big read ahead cache.
