NAPA vcd player stutters on some movies

hi. i just bought a NAPA dav311 vcd/mp3/cd player. i found that with some movies it stutters constanly every 2 seconds but with other movies it's fine. i thought it might be the key frames. maybe if i make them further apart it wil stutter less?? i don't know. anyone ? if it is the key frames, can anyone tell me how to change them with tmpg.

I bought the Napa DAV310 about a year and a half ago. I soon realised it was a waste of money. Anyay to answer your question, it seems that the NAPA can't deal with bitrate spikes, to get a smooth encode you have to make sure the GOPS are all constant size and make sure the encoder DOESN'T put a keyframe at scene changes (there is a setting in TMPG). You may also have to lower the bitrate a little to say 1100.

On my model the sound quality of MP3s was quite bad with digital noise present, how is yours? I bought a RioVolt in the end for MP3s and gave up on the idea of a portable VCD player.

I have a 310 as well ... mp3 quality is inferior w/ a permanent high-pitched background noise, and VCDs _sometimes_ stutter. There have been tons of threads on how to avoid this over at the vcdhelp forum ... one such thread is this one: http://forum.vcdhelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=70659&highlight=napa.
I don't really feel like authoring discs specially for the Napa plus I have quite a lot of bought VCDs ... I don't use it that often and have not tried any of the solutions suggested.

as tenebrenz up above, I owned a napa 10 months ago and gave it back (7 days return guarantee).

it played jerky VCD's (hiss spikes and stutter, TMPGEnc method-I tried it but didn't work), had trouble with variable bitrate mp3, and worst at all it stuttered while I played it in my car (mp3 mem much too low).

low-low value for money, for my pocket at least...

well all i wanted was something to play my movies on in my room without forking our £150 on a standalone DVD player which i won't be able to take anywhere. ok, mp3 is not that good, slight echo but it has been improved since tehe 310. cd play is standard, good with sony ear phones, although antishock is still low after they "improved"it in 311. as far as i've seen, most of my movies work fine in it, it's just a couple that stutter. and from the sites you gave me i can see it can be fixed. thanks.
