Strange artifacts when indexing

My encodes are turning out beautifully, save one annoyance. Regardless of the media player used, when indexing to a scene (usually using a control bar slider), the video becomes a swath of psychedelic green and upside-down for a few seconds, then quickly returns to normal. What is this and how can I get rid of it?!
