View Full Version : Subtitles disappear when changing 4:3 flag to 16:9

I purchased an anime DVD, Initial D Third Stage --- well, the aspect ratio was messed up (video was 16:9, but the ifo's had the flag set to 4:3)..so all I did was copy to my hd, change the flag from 4:3 to 16:9, and my subtitles won't play anymore. Sure, chinese subtitles are still viewable, but that doesn't help me much.

Anyone have any guesses as to why this is happening?

I can tell you why it happens, but I'm not 100% sure of the exact fix. Using IfoEdit, find the PGC for the movie, in it you'll find the "subpicture stream control". This defines which stream is to be used for each of 4 different aspect ratio and display option combinations. For some help see http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/DVD/pgc.html
The subpicture (subtitles) aren't displaying because there is no stream, or the wrong stream, defined for widescreen. Try values like 80 00 00 00, or 80 80 80 80

Try again. You were so lucky, the only server crash in 3 months!
For straight info pages (not the rest of the site) there is a mirror on AOL ( http://members.aol.com/mpucoder/DVD/ )

is there any way that maybe I could email the ifo's and bup's to you? i've tried reading through the stuff at your site (though I couldn't find what you were mentioning, closest thing I could find was "Subpicture stream attributes" ...

this problem has been annoying me for a while now :(
