View Full Version : whats going on with movies skipping from vob to vob and back

I have several movies so far that I have had same problem with. I have not watched all my rips so far, so there may be more. Movies I have noticed this with so far is Hide & Seek, O Brother Where Art Thou, and Rose Red. After movie is ripped and burned to cd, It will play as usual and all of sudden it will skip to another part of movie. I have found post on rose red doing this sort of thing. Hell it dont even start from the beginning. Other two movies above start lskipping parts later in movie. RIps appeared to be normal, but it appears that posssibly the original dvd tells it to skip around when playing the movie. Are they (companies like macrov..ion) doing this to keep people from copying? Is there a surefire way around this while still utilizing dvd2svcd because I find it to be one of the best frontends out there.

Is there a list out there which movies are screwed like this? I would like to know ahead of time before I rip and burn a movie to find out later it is totally screwed up. Damn shame if they are going to start doing this now.

Are you using interal routines to rip the VOBs? If you are using something else (i.e. SmartRipper) you're asking for trouble.

Okay I'll keep that in mind too(re, smartripper). I did a sucessfull rip of rose red with internal dvd2svcd program, but audio was way off synch then. So I gave up. SmartRipper has give me some problems such as the vob mixup so I wont use it anymore I guess. However, I already have all these movis ripped to hard drive (the actual vob files) How can I correct thes movies so they playback correct. Same outcome with PC or DVD playback by the way.

Before you attempt conversion of any kind you need to verify the DVD itself and the ripped VOBs using a program such as PowerDVD. This will assure you that there are or aren't problems with the DVD or rip itself.

Also, if you have trouble with internal routines, use vStrip.. it should be capable of ripping any DVD in existence.

Just to let whoever wants to know... Hide and seek movie ripped and burned correct now. I now dont recommend smartripper to anyone. Just use the internal vob copying routine of dvd2svcd.

What about the movies I have already ripped with smartripper and have synch and vob problems with because I dont have the dvds for these anymore? Is there a way to correct. For example, Nightmare on Elm Street 2 halfway thru movie audio gets out of synch all of a sudden and I dont have the dvd for this movie and several other to rerip with dvd2svcd?

You're outta luck man.. you might get lucky on one or two and get a successful conversion but it's very unlikely. You'll have to reaquire the DVDs and rerip with interal routines.

what abbout the audio synch problem on noes pt 2 halfway thru movie? Can i fix that fairly easy? Is that due to using smartripper as well? Audio is lagging behind about a sec or two all of a sudden and continues on second mpeg disc.

That could be due to SmartRipper. That's why in DVD2SVCD the default audio offset is 2 (which bbmpeg does), so that you don't have those sync problems.

If you still have the .vob files on your HD you can re-rip them using IR or vstrip. If you dont then there is pretty much nothing that you can do. No one knows why Smartripper doesnt work with D2S. I have heard that if you get a earlier version of Smartripper then you will be less likley to have problems. But if you can use the IR or vstrip then dont even consider Smartripper that should only be used as a last resort.
