I'm about to encode my first edited together self shot collection of videos. I've experiemented with several different vbr rates and found that it seems using a range of 1k-4k looks about the same as 3k-6k.

What I want to know is if anyone has had problems with settop players being picky with bit rates. I know the spec is 10k for all video and audio but I'm basically only concerned with the video right now.

I'm using TMPGenc 2.56.

Thanks

Since you are writing to DVD-R rather than CDR/CDRW, you should have no issues pertaining to bitrate, really. Any player that fails to cope with a bitrate within the DVD-spec limits is failing to perform to the specification demanded of the licencees - in other words, unless you have a player which should never have been granted a license, you should be just fine. To be honest, you are far more likely to have difficulties with DVD-R disks themselves - some brands, ars the numerous threads attest to, are just not up to the job at present.

Good luck, let us know how you get on. If you want a SAFE rule of thumb (this, I STRESS, is only an ultra-conservative rule of thumb), then don't let your video peak over 8mbs. Unless you are encoding some seriously noisy or fast moving footage, 8mbps is more than adequate anyway. Also, do bear in mind that TMPGEnc has a sneaky habit of exceeding the max bitrate you set it to. This being the case, 8mbps is a good conservative max bitrate to set TMPGEnc to. Suck it and see. You can get a bitrate viewer, to see how your files are turning out, by visiting www.tecoLTD.com

Happy encoding... :)

Thanks guys...

I ended up doing the encode using MVBR using 1000 minimum and 6500 max. The Bitrate Viewer you recommended says that the avg was 6830.

I created a basic working menu using Photoshop 6, authored using ReelDVD 2.5.1.x a nd burned the files created using Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0.

Distributing the family videos on DVD with a working menu just simply rocks.

Thanks again for the help.
