CCE Stops after 1st Pass

I just spent the last hour and a half searching and reading posts similar to my situation, but I can't seem to find a definate solution to my specific problem. So, alas, a new post.

Anyway, doing Multipass VBR with CCE 2.5 and DVD2SVCD 1.0.9 b2, fails after the first pass and just closes. The vaf file is written without a hitch, but when I get to 25% (if I'm doing 4 pass) or 33% (if I'm doing 3 pass) CCE will just close, and DVD2SVCD will not continue.

The encoding works fine if I do a single pass, but then, why would I want to do that ;)?

I don't really understand why it would do this, or how to fix it. When the problem first started (a couple days ago), it successfully finished the first pass (in 4 pass VBR) and got to 50%, then failed. Since then I haven't even been able to get past the first pass.

I don't remember ever having this problem before, but then I haven't gotten a full success in CCE yet (still a n00b). I just added another stick of RAM, and in some of my reading people suggested that 2 sticks of ram could be a problem, while others debated this.. and I don't wanna sacrifice the extra RAM just on behalf of CCE.

I was having checksum errors after the first pass before this problem started, so I installed the patch to fix that problem and that it did. Then the next encode I attempted was a 4pass, and that was the one that got to 50% before it closed. Then I did another 4pass attempt which it failed at 25%, and another encode of 3passes, which it failed at 33%. I then did a single pass encode, and it completed successfully.

I'm an avid benchmarker, and have run my fair share of memory stress tests, so I know that memory isn't the problem.

When that happens, and nothing more is listed, is when CCE closed on me (at 25 or 33%, depending on # of passes). It should be noted that CCE did not give any errors, but simply closed itself.

First thing go and update 2 the lastest build which is build 3.


Also have you tried taking out the ram and doing a test? i'd try that first since you just added that piece of hardware. And its not cce that has a problem with more then 1 stick of ram, what really is going on is motherboards that were made up to last year have issues with more then 1 stick. They can show these issues by either being a bit slower, crashing programs failing tests that before they would finish.

Thanks for the prompt response, always appreciated. I will update to the latest build soon, I've been meaning to do so. Also, my motherboard is newer than last year (only a few months old, though I couldn't say precisely). I haven't tested without the new stick of ram, but I was having problems before (like the checksum), so I don't understand how it could affect it.. perhaps if all other options are exhausted I will test without the new stick.

Any other ideas?

I think your problem belongs to those CCE issues now, and I think you could try all those suggestions available in the forum - but just a quick one that helped a friend of mine with his new CPU/board combo.

I suggested to use the new "MPEG2DEC2.DLL" by Tom Barry instead of the old "MPEG2DEC.DLL" - you can change it in the "Frameserver" tab. IIRC Tom said he doubled the buffers and fixed some small bugs with it making it maore stable.

For my friend it helped a lot - no CCE hangs anymore since.

Perhaps worth a quick try,

Thanks gerti, but I've already been using the new version of mpeg2dec (mpeg2dec2). I'll search and read some more similar topics, but I doubt I'll find something I hadn't already seen. Any more suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks as always :)

Edit: Is it possible that my problem was avisynth-related? I just checked my version and it was 6x, so I upped to the latest (beta 7e)... could that solve the problem, perhaps?

Hi all, this is the first post for me after month of reading this forum (sorry if my english is bad). I decide to register cos I've the same problem as UltimateDBZ. I used DVD2SVCD 1.0.9 b2, since it comes out, with CCE 2.5 and all works fine but last week appears the same problem as UltimateDBZ so I upgraded to version 1.0.9 b3 but still the same problem. Unfortunately I deleted the logfile but it was like the one posted from Ultimate and I changed nothing on my comp. I tried with a small size of a vob,200 mb,and all works fine. Now I have done a clean install of DVD2SVCD & CCE 2.5 and this weekend I test if there is still the problem.

I haven't tested this yet, so perhaps you can do it for me and give the results (I deleted the vob & ifo files of the dvd i was working on, so I can't test it). I was reading some more topics that are somewhat similar to our problem and I found 2 suggestions I had not yet tried.

1) Disable the anti-noise filter. It seemed to work for Shrek, and maybe it will work for our situation.

2) Raise luminance. Since dark scenes have such a low bitrate, CCE is known to crash for this reason. Raising luminance brightens the overall picture and raises the bitrate. Set Lum. Offset to 5 in the DVD2AVI tab.

Also, before you test this make sure you are using MPEG2DEC2.dll (in frameserver tab) and the latest version of both DVD2SVCD (build 3) and AviSynth (beta 7e).

I did not try either of the above 2 things, nor did I have the latest avisynth dll, one or all of which could have been the problem.

Please, if you have the time, test these out and post results. Input from other members will still be appreciated :) especially if you have some other suggestions.

I have done another encode using Luminance, the new avisynth, and using Anti-noise, and 4 pass encoding worked without a hitch. Thanks for the assistance, all!
