View Full Version : Problem with SVCD subtitles [newbie]

4th July 2002, 23:12
First of all, a warning: I'm a n00b in the SVCD stuff, although I've read quite a lot and I've so far done many DivX. This was my very first attempt to make a svcd. The movie is Reservoir Dogs, it's a greek production (only greek subtitles in the DVD).

I guess I must first quote the dvd2svcd log file:

I burned the 2 discs with Nero / Daemon Tools, as described in the faq, and the svcd plays fine in both my standalone Pioneer DV-535 and in my PC with WinDVD 4 Plus. Chapters work great. The only problem I have is that I get no subtitles in my Pioneer :(

In the Subtitles tab of d2s, I had chosen Rip Subtitles (SVCD), Subtitles Lang 1 Greek, Std Y-pos PAL -1, min. between subs 100ms, and I did not touch any of the colors in the palette. After the ripping, d2s displayed a selection window: unfortunately I don't quite remember what I did exactly in this window; as far as I can tell, the first subtitle stream, Greek, was empty in the right part of the window, so I chose deselect. Below that, there were two more subtitles (called unspecified) with greek letters looking ok at the right. I chose one of them and continued.

By the way, in my subs folder there are hundreds of bmp files (white letters with black background), two .sub and two .txt files.

I would really appreciate any help, and please forgive my ignorance!

In order for subtitles to be displayed on your stand-alone DVD-player u have to choose permanent subtitles in the "subtitles" pane in DVD2SVCD.

Pioneer does not support selectable subtitles as I believe is covered in the Q&A which is mandatory reading material. Please read them carefully b4 asking a question. Check out http://www.vcdhelp.com to find more details about what ur stand-alone DVD-player can handle.

I quote:

Q16: I have encoded a movie with subtitles, but no subtitles are shown when I play the movie. Why?
A: The subtitles only work on Standalone DVD Players that supports SVCD and/or CVD - aka China Video Disc - Subtitles. As of now there are no Software players that supports SVCD/CVD Subtitles. An option is to use "permanent subtitles".

Thanks a lot for your quick and prompt reply. I checked the compatibility list at www.vcdhelp.com and, indeed, the selectable subs are not supported by the Pioneer DV-535. The funny thing is that I had, in fact, already read the Q&A, but it seems that I had mis-interpreted the section talking about the compatible players. Please let me quote from there:

DVD players that play SVCDs on CD-R Confirmed by DVD2SVCD forum members.
(S)=SVCD subtitles, (C)=CVD subtitles, (SC)=Both SVCD & CVD subtitles

...
Pioneer DV-333, DV-341, DV-343, DV-344, DV-434, DV-444, DV-525, DV-C503, DV-535

I now understand that the meaning is that Pioneer models can play SVCD's, but they do not support selectable subs (since there is no S, C, SC mark). My apologies for the confusion, I should have noticed it from the very beginning...

May I ask another question: I guess there should be a way to re-position the permanent subs, by tweaking the Y-pos, so that the subs do not fall on the frame (see the capture here (http://users.forthnet.gr/ath/harryfou/cap001.jpg)) Could you recommend any values I should try, or I have to rely on the dvd2svcd preview window before ripping? My TV set is 4:3.

-1 is the original subtitle position...sometimes I'll screw around with it. Yes you can rely on the preview window. It's accurate.

Thanks a lot for your answers. I re-encoded with permanent subs this time and I managed, indeed, to place them out of the movie. Btw, d2s crashed at the bbMPEG mux step

Being my first try with svcd, all I have to say is that I am really impressed by the "easy power" of d2s and the quality given by CCE. Oh, not to forget, I love the imdb feature :p
