Unofficial IRC channel for XviD on openprojects

Hi,

ther were rumours about an IRC channel for XviD floating on the net and we hope this will be announced from XviD dev team soon.

In the meantime we have created an unofficial IRC chat for XviD on irc.openprojects.net , channel #xvid ( you guessed it ). Note that this will be abdoned at once if XviD team launches an official channel of their own.

Uh, now THAT'S definatly odd ;)

I used IRCnet with -h for some months until he went on his trip - so that channel was always there for over 5 months now :)

I had no idea ! Why IRCnet ? Openprojects seems to be much better suited, as XviD is an opensource project ? No official announcement here or on videocoding.de about the channel ?

Anyway, can some mod here close, or better even, delete/move this thread ?

There is somebody with the nick 'Cabra' sitting in the channel and has ops, but didnt register the channel nor is he giving us ops to do it .... we better abandon the channel immediately and use the existing one on IRCnet for quick questions.

For detailled technical discussion IRC is bad anyway IMHO .... you can guess my preferred way of how to keep a good, high level discussion going i guess .... webboards of course ;) !

LOL! Didn't know this channel existed before I (re-)created it :). Well you're also just as welcome as anyone else to drop by Koepi :D. Some more replies to the post (http://www.xvid.org/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=603&forum=2&4) on the XviD forum (http://www.xvid.org/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=603&forum=2&4) would also be nice. The thread seems to be a bit abandoned.

Who deleted it? that's hardly possible since you can see when somebody edits the thread... only admin changes are invisible but there's a thread log which is empty for that thread..

Just clarifying a few things :

The user CabRa, who was sitting in the #xvid channel on openprojects ( and in fact he is sitting there very often ) is a friend of Nando and a big XviD fan.

He had no 'strange intentions' with the channel as i was suggesting, but was simply unaware that it was him blocking ops to register the channel to chanserv.

Sending my sincere apologies to CabRa for my 'fast' prejudices.

The channel is now registered to me, Acaila and C_Cuffs have auto-ops and we could start to discuss settings etc. there if there is interest.

Hmmm, and the last few days finally ppl started to come to the IRCnet channel :(. Regulars at the moment are: me, sysKin, albeu, and Suikun. Less regulars, but still available some of the time are: suxendrol, g0th.

I do hope we can get to something of an agreement which channel is the one to stay. Two channels is basically too confusing. Please do NOT flame about how good openprojects is because it's made for stuff like this, and how the ircd is better etc.
I hope I can get suxendrol to discuss the idea of an official channel with the rest of the developers.

mf, i am really sorry, i really had no idea the channel on IRCnet existed when we created the channel. But its a matter of fact that there were 3 users already sitting in the channel ( unregistered ) when we arrived, being a clear sign for me that users expect #xvid on openprojects and nowhere else.

I really appreciate your idea to ask suxendrol to discuss with other dev members about an 'official' XviD IRC channel .... let me know what the outcome is.

BTW : most good IRC clients like mIRC from www.mirc.com will support logging to more than one server. I am most of the time linked to openprojects and EFnet ( for #doom9 ), and this is not causing any problems. in mIRC simply tick the 'open in new server window' box when creating a 2nd connection, and you are connected to both.

BTW2 : I hope you will give the ops in our channel ( ProfDrMorp, CabRa, albeu ) also auto-ops on your channel, in case Isibaar and his team vote to go for the IRCnet channel ..... of course you get close to founder level ( 49 , max i can give you, 50 is founder ) on the openprojects channel if you register your nick to chanserv ( /msg chanserv register <password> ) and join the channel on openprojects ;) !

Thank you for the op on openprojects ChristianHJW :), you didn't have to give me that much rights though (nearest to founder ? :eek: ), until other ops will go argue with me, I've turned the openprojects channel into a support channel, and the IRCnet channel into a development-only channel, as far as I can remember ChristianHJW had anything against that, so basically if you're a cl00l355 n00b (;)->Doom9), you'll want to join the openprojects channel, and if you want to discuss development you'll want to join the IRCnet channel. Now some advertising to any developers that might be reading this :), development discussion over IRC seems to be really smooth, and and it would really help out if there were some more developers. Anyway, I'm looking forward to see YOU (the one reading this :p) on one or both of the channels :).

The channel on IRCnet is NOT meant for asking questions that are NOT regarding XviD source code! This means, you can ask stuff about CVS, about committing code, about the code itself, or about feature implementations.
---This does NOT mean you can ask questions about your Hauppage WinTV that doesn't work! NOT even when you say you know it's offtopic!!---

Please bug the ops on the openprojects channel with stuff like that (although even there it's offtopic, also when you say you know that it's offtopic).

As noobs will be persistent, my fingers will reach the /kb keys more easily. Do NOT feel offended if, the coming days, you will be kickbanned off of the channel due to annoying offtopic questions. You have no right to be offended, and will be ignored when messaging in private.

Have I made myself clear for everyone, or do I need to include a brazilian, italian, polish and german translation ?

well.. you don't really need a separate channel for everything, do you? all xvid questions are more than welcome in my channel despite not having xvid in the channel name.. and there's no risk of being kicked for asking a non xvid related question or a non development related question either.

Having development and support seperate is a nice thing. Until further notice there now are two different channels on two different networks, for two different purposes. It's a nice way to solve things without having to drop one of the channels. So I don't think there's anything wrong with two channels, except that simple newbie minds get confused easily.

#XviD on IRCnet is now completely dead!

I've handed over the channel to some polish ppl who would like to use the channel for polish discussions. I agreed because the channel is empty 90% of the time. The channel bot "xvid" will soon leave too and after that I won't be on it anymore either. So don't join it anymore unless you're polish :).

For XviD IRC discussion, join #XviD at irc.freenode.net.

Do also note that there is still no official channel. Although some developers do discuss development there (read: on #xvid at freenode), it's purely unofficial and any activities there (like binary distribution of the codec) can't be put in connection to XviD officially, and are the sole responsibility of the person(s) who engage in them.
