I almost reencoded a movie after having really weird sync problem, but it wasn't needed. This is kind of an FYI for anyone who may come across this error in the future.
Problem:
Sync is fine at the beginning of the movie, and when seeking to various points it seems fine. When playing from any position in the file, it will stay in sync for a minute or two and then go completely out of sync (audio +-40sec to video).
Solution:
The post-processing setting for the DivX codec was two notches up from the bottom, which was way too much for a PII 450 to handle. My guess is it just started dropping frames like mad and things got worse from there. Setting the slider all the way to the left resulted in the audio maintaining sync. I have seen this happen with both the DivX 3.11 and DivX 5 codecs.
So if your hardware is marginal for playback, check your post-processing settings. Hope this helps someone.
