View Full Version : Encoded Movie "The Shining" - No smooth Playback

Hi,

I'm new to Gordian Knot, so i followed exactly the guides from Doom9 and carfully read the tutorials and readmes.

Source is: "The Shining", PAL, 4:3, 1,33:1

I made a 2-CD DivX 3.11alpha rip with AC3 Sound and resolution of 512 x 368. Compress check returned a value of 76.6%. Bitrate for Movie reached 1310 kBits/s.

Encoding worked fine, quality is excellent, no sound sync problems but i've got no smooth playback. The problem is minimal but visible to me.
During the first helicopter flight i think either a frame misses or is shown with a very very small delay. The text (movie title and main cast) in the following minutes of the file makes minimal jumps over the screen.
I can't explain it exactly but the movie is not played 100% smooth. Problem is not caused by Codec or Player. Same problem occurs with Windows Media Player (my favourite is BSPlayer). CPU usage is ok and i never noticed playback problems so far...

Perhaps someone can help me, cause i'm interested in a 100% excellent rip.

Tnx in advance

Matthias

Not sure that we are thinking about the same "minimal jumps" but anyway, most of the DVDs I have viewed on the puter has those minimal jumps in the text, that is, it's not standing perfectly still, just some small jumps. Hmm, the movie itself however, plays perfectly well. So what I'm trying to say, those minimal jumps may be because of the source.

Try turning "Force film" off in DVD2AVI, when ur making the project file.

Forced Film was off and i think i cannot notice these "jumps"
viewing the DVD with PowerDVD.

I'll try to rip another one and view the result. Perhaps the problem is the movie or dvd.

Anyways thanks...

playback from hd or cd?

cpu? gfx-card?

usually ac3 - avi's work fine on your system?

load the movie in nandub, then save a new avi without audio - do you still see the jumps?

My System:

Athlon TB 1000 Mhz, ASUS A7V133,
768 MB PC-133 CL2 SDRAM,
Geforce 2 MX 32MB, Detonator 29.42
Windows 2000 Prof. Service Pack 2

Movie is located on HD.

The Avi without sound works fine. So the problem
seems to be the ac3 sound.
I've tested another movie with AC3 which worked fine.
The difference between the two is the number of channels.
The "Shining" AC3 File is 5 channels, the one which works fine
is only 2 channels (i'm wondering why AC3 then...)
I've installed the ac3-filters of doom9.org.

The same problem occurs even with a Athlon XP 1800+, so i don't think
it's the CPU.

Hum..... very strange

here comes a dirty suggestion.

1. install the ogg directshow filters
2. try running the already muxed avi through oggmux without adding any further sound.

might work and might save you from experimenting with different interleaving settings

curious to hear the results :D

you have to experiment with different interleave settings. try 1,2 and 3 frames...

@mgoetz,

I had this problem with my AC3 rips also, (at least I think we're talking about the same thing). There's a topic on it somewhere in the forums (can't remember where). Its in the interleave settings. I did some testing on it and now use 64/64ms interleave settings when adding the ac3 track in nandub. Works perfectly, no jumps.

Good luck:)

First of all: Thanks for helping me.

I've got a lot of exams this month, so I weren't able
to spend a lot of time in testing.

@kilg0r3:
I've never worked with ogg until now - i'll try that

@TheWEF:
I tried 1 and 3 frames interleave. 3 frames made the result even worse. Interleaving 1 Frame was the best setting but even then I noticed my problem.

@nig103: Thanks!
I used Gordian Knot to make the complete movie with audio and cannot use a "ms" setting. Only Frame Interleaving is accepted. Is it possible to save the Gordian Knot avi without sound, and then add the ac3 Track with 64ms Interleaving in Nandub? And what setting should i use in Gordian Knot? 1 Frame or doesn't this matter?

Best regards,
mgoetz

@mgoetz

Yep, Gordion knot doesn't do MS interleaving. In gordian knot when you add the job you just select "No audio processing", so it does just the video.

Then open Nandub, open the video file, select "direct stream copy" under the video menu. Now go to the audio menu and select "ac3 audio" then grab the .ac3 file (checking what the delay is), and set your interleave settings to 64/64ms and whatever delay the ac3 track said. As I said there is a topic somewhere on it, in that it says that the general concensus was that multiples of 32ms are good for AC3 interleaving. When I first started doing AC3 rips I played around with diff settings, 32, 64, 96. Came to the conclusion that 64/64ms works well.

Good luck
:)

sorry, the below message is from my other post "new idea" which i accidentally made by pressing "new thread" instead of "post reply". dumbarse. anyway, heres my suggestion:

i ran into the same problem, with unsmooth playback on the movie evolution, but i was using mp3, not ac3. im not completely sure how i fixed the problem i was having, but it was in dvd2avi. im not entirely sure where the specific problem was as i must have changed every setting, but try changing the colour space or using forcefilm if nig103's suggestion doesnt work (which sounds a lot more liable to work than this one).

Some news:

I've tried the 2 frames interleave setting - same as 1 frame interleave -> still visible but better than 3 frames.

Next i tried the problem solution posted by nig103. I used the setting 2 frames in gordian knot and added the ac3 track in nandub with 64/64 ms interleaving. And it works fine!

My idea: Check the Delay of the AC3 (-> filename). Then use a setting of 1,2,3 frames (check the shown ms intervall) which is near to the delay of the file. Add the ac3 Track with x*32 ms Delay -> same as above. Try a value near to the setting in the filename.

Comments?

The movie:

Everything works fine except one (small) thing (i'm afraid this movie don't wants to be bought not ripped):
I split the movie into two parts (nearly 700 MB). The first 15(?) frames of the 2nd part are played much too fast. Perhaps this is another ac3-sync problem? It's not a great thing (less than a second of the movie) but i don't know the reason. I used Nandub for splitting and followed the guides (last keyframes of 699 MB etc.)

Perhaps someone has an idea...
